David Einig Obituary

David Einig

October 6, 1956 - December 6, 2024

Azeitão, Portugal - David Einig, 68, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 6, 2024, in Azeitão, Portugal. The son of Richard (Dick) Einig and Jocelyn (Joey) Einig, David leaves sisters Kim May, Elizabeth Ketcher, Anne Toppen, and nieces and nephews Ben, Sam, Jack, Sarah, Kate, Isabelle, Carly, and Will. In recent years, David had a plethora of beloved friends at Sage Publishing, Nancy Dennis and Zach Valladon among his closest, and they all lived in his heart as family. His Sage family was so special that upon retiring David said "Sage was the best ten years of my working experience." In Portugal, Neil Richmond was an invaluable guide and dear friend. All who knew David were charmed by his storytelling, his signature smile, humor, and laugh, and his breathless fascination with art, books, sports, and music.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, David attended Parkway Central High School, where he was dubbed "Erl, the Pearl" by his basketball team. He attended Michigan State University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he earned his business degree. He was a top salesperson in his book publishing career, known for making instant connections filled with knowledge and wit. Following his retirement, David fulfilled his dream to move to Portugal.

David lived at his own frequency with a sense of style rooted in jazz, a touch of Marvin Gaye, Sinatra, Pavarotti, and classic Mahler. He basked in the finer things in life; he planted roses, had conversations with his cats, and he golfed with his nephew. A St. Louis Cardinals' baseball fan, he also loved watching Lebron and the NBA. David was a vibrant light that will never fade. He rests now surrounded in love.

David's life will be celebrated in Cascais, Portugal, and his roses, flowers, and spirit will continue to blossom in Azeitão, Portugal. Acknowledgements to: Elizabeth Ketcher; please consider a gift to a local cat shelter or rescue, especially for adult cats.

David and I spoke at least 2 times a week while we were colleagues at SAGE. We share many private details of our lives and I loved him as a unique individual and friend. My last VM from him was in 2023. I know he was having fun living out his dream and I will really miss him. Thank You Dear David for your friendship. Love you and will see you in the other side

I am so sorry to hear this news. I lived across the hall from David when he lived in Clayton. He was such a kind man. He taught me a little about cats and I got to watch Iris for him a few times when he went out of town. He also befriended the woman who lived upstairs who was retired and spent much of her time tending to beautiful flowers she planted on the side of and behind the building we lived in. When she went out of town, David would take care of the weeding and I would do the watering since I was not traveling. I learned a lot from David but was always so impressed with how naturally warm and friendly he was to people. My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends.

David and I were in the same class (1975) at Parkway Central High School. I always admired him and looked up to him as a role model. The one specific memory I have of him is that we were asked to play a recording of our favorite song for a class (I can't remember which one). Dave's favorite was "Crystal Blue Persuasion" by Tommy James and the Shondells.

David was a dear friend at Booksource, Unique Books, and stops in between. The lovely obituary in the Post-Dispatch describes him well. My sympathy to his family.
