But there will be a time
When I'll see your face
And I'll hear your voice
And there we will laugh again
And there will come a day
When I'll hold you close
No More tears to cry
'Cause we'll have forever
But I'll say Goodbye for now

It's been almost a year and it is still hard to believe David is gone. The kids and I miss him each and everyday, but we know we will see him again one day in a place where there is no more suffering. We appreciate the kind words and prayers from all the people who knew and loved him. A song that has given me some comfort comes to mind as I think about the last year...
"This is what it means to be held. How it feels, when the sacred is torn from your life and you survive. This is what it is to be loved and to know that the promise was that when everything fell, we'd be held."
God is still good, and I thank Him for bringing us through.

I'm another Martin High grad, I was a year ahead of David at Martin and Young Jr High. I didn't know David while in school, but I did hear stories (always funny and/or crazy) about the Van Meter brothers. I was lucky enough to work with his brother Chris later, and then meet David - both are/were wonderfull guys. My condolences to the family.

I just found out about David's passing and would like to offer my deepest condolences. I grew up with all of the Van Meter kids from our time at Jason B. Little through Martin High School. Some of the funniest moments in my life involved David and his brothers. Thanks for the wonderful memories and may God Bless you all with strength.

Although I have not kept in touch with David throughout the years , I remember what a great freind I was blessed with & I will truly miss him. I remember the classes that we had together in high school & a particular job at a pizza restaurant we both worked at.Those were the good old days (the days with no worries, just good times). I'm gonna miss you brother!

Dave,

David was someone that always made me laugh, UNCONTROLLABLY! High school biology wouldn't have been the same without him.
I was then fortunate to see him many times after high school when he worked at the Black Eyed Pea, laughed again at our 10 yr reunion and again by chance, about 2 years ago.
I met a very nice woman at a party, Laura Van Meter. I told her I had known a David Van Meter in high school and she said that was her husband and that they just lived across the street. She was nice enough to take me over and I got to see David again and meet his kids. I've thought of him often as his nephew, Graham, is in my daughter's class at Hill.
David, God called you home, your life's work done. Heaven is shining brighter because of you. I will pray for your parents, your siblings and above all - your children. I hope these memories will forever be with them so they will know how much their dad was loved and can find comfort in your memory. You are missed and remembered in such a wonderful light!
Until we see each other again,

It is still so unbelievable that David is gone from this world we know. David was such a passionate person about so many things; including his relationship with his Lord and Savior. He was an amazing man full of life, love and always ready to give his all to help someone out. He will truly be missed. I'm so thankful that I had just a monent in this life to work with David at The Black-Eyed Pea. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I cannot tell you how shocked I was to hear today of David's passing. I was just remembering him a few days ago...the wonderful times we all had together working at The Black-eyed Pea. David had a special way of making you feel like you were the only person around. His beautiful blue eyes, warm smile and unbelievable friendship were one of a kind. David, you were and always will be one of the best people I ever had the pleasure to know. I miss you and pray that your family finds solace in knowing that you made such an impact on the lives of so many.

Dear Van Meter Family,
We attended Martin High School together and can remember David always wearing a smile. Such a neat guy who was always nice to everyone. May God help you through this difficult time. This world is indeed better for having David here on Earth....even if we wished it had been much longer.
With heartfelt sympathy,

Dear Van Meters, It's been almost 2 weeks and it's still hard to believe that David's smile and outgoing, infectious personality will only be a memory from now on. Karen and I feel so bad about this and we're so sorry he left this life so early. It's comforting to read all the entries in this book and realize that, even in his short life, he made a huge difference in this world and in the lives of friends, co-workers, and family. His children can be proud that he was thier father. We're so sorry and always here for any of you.

It broke my heart to hear of David's Death. My initial reaction was sadness. As I read the comments, I was struck by the numerous references to what a great friend he was. I too must say David was great friend to me also and that is what makes this so painful. My condolences go to the Van Meter Family because such a kind and fun person will be so sorely missed and leave a large void in your heart. I hope they will fill those void with all the good memories David’s life brought. I know that is what I’ve been doing. Much love to the Van Meters

Our sincerest condolences to David's family and children. Darren's known David since high school and coached his son Gabe (the Babe) for 5 years in Little League. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. When your heart is deeply burdened, may your faith prevail and bring you comfort. Though, regrettably, we lost touch in our mid-twenties, I still regard David as one of the best “guy friends” I ever had. We were closest in high school, and he always made me feel special and loved. He was a rare, precious, and thoughtful friend. Even though I haven’t seen him in years, I can still vividly recall his beautiful spirit, and his handsome face with piercing blue eyes and a laughter-filled smile. Thank you, David for being you and a dear friend to so many.

For all of us, there are people who come into your life, and quickly make an indelible positive impact. For me, David was one of only a few. He had an truly infectious spirit, and being fortunate enough to share space and time with him even for this short while, I know that memories of him will be with me for the duration of my life. After having met him for the first time, I had come home and told my wife, "I met a really neat guy today." And I couldn't have been more right. He made you instantly comfortable, then made you laugh, and then impressed you with the "cleanliness" of his faith, even if your own was clouded with doubt. I remember deep conversations about faith and action, and he always impressed me with the comfort and calm positivity of his beliefs. Still today I struggle with my own faith, but knowing what a beautiful guy he was, it strengthens my belief that he of all people found a better place. It is absolutely surreal that you have moved on, David, but you impacted me without probably even knowing it, and I am honored to have called you my friend.

Dear Van Meter Family:
I got to know David through work at AstraZeneca. Even after he left our compay, I would still run into him from time to time. He had an amazing way of picking up right where we left off. I will always remember how he would make a dull meeting funny by his wild sense of humor. He always knew how to lighten the moment with his quick wit. When I think about him, it's his smile I remember the most.
I am so sorry for his passing. It is truly a great loss to you and all who loved him. You are all in my heart and prayers. Time will help but knowing that he is with our Lord is a real comfort.
God Bless you.

While I only knew David briefly when we worked together at The Shorthorn in 1989, I remember him as a very funny, giving person as well as a gifted journalist. We spent many afternoons, working side by side in front of a CRT, trying to meet deadlines. He always encouraged me and gave me writing tips and we exchanged a number of food-service war stories (he was working at The Black-Eyed Pea restaurant). He always struck me as prepetually positive, creative and fearless!
Thank you, David, for your positive impact on my life; I wish we had stayed in touch. My your family find healing; rest in peace, my friend.

My prayers to David's family.
When he came to AZ, he told me about a book that was very special to him. It was titled, "Love you Forever". He actually bought me one to share with my young son. I knew this was a testament to the love he felt for his family.
My son is now 8yrs of age, still loves the book, and he has occasionally bought one for a friend.
One day my son said 'the man who gave you this book must really love his family, and his kids are very lucky to have a Dad who loves them this much'.
Prayers to his family. I know he was proud and full of love for you.

I'll never forget the first time I met David in 1985, the Sunday Chris brought him to church and he was baptized. He came up out of the water and gave Leon a bear hug. Then, David and Chris embraced. Leon told the congregation how that reminded him of when Andrew brought his brother Peter to Jesus. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. That's how David lived his life - with passion, faith and love. I miss you already, bro. But, "I'll see you again, when the stars fall from the sky, and the moon has turned red, over One Tree Hill."

I am so sorry to hear that David has passed on to be with God.
I met David throughout his interview and hiring process with a pharmaceutical company.
We got to know each other a little bit, and his love for his family was so evident.
He adored them. If I'm not mistaken, he also had a young son, or two children, I cannot recall at this moment.
David told me that his favorite book to read to his family was 'Love You Forever', and he bet me that I could not read it without getting a tear in my eye...I promised him i'd go buy it and read it to my young son...
I did not get the chance to purchase it, as a few days later a package arrived in the mail. David had bought and sent me that book! I was so surprised!
A few days after he started work, he stopped by my office to meet me in person and make sure I'd received the book.
My son was a toddler at that time, and is now age 8.
He keeps in in the backseat of our car, as he loves to read it and look through it while I drive.
It is our favorite book, and he still likes to hear the 'story' about how we got the book.
My story: "A man named David gave me this book. He knew what a gift it was to have God gift him with children in his life and fill his heart with love. By giving us this book, he was saying how much he loved his own family, and I bet they are very proud of him.
That is how much I love you and our family"
When my son was about 4, and I told him this story for the millionth time, he looked at me one day and said...'his kids are lucky to have someone love them that much'.
Over the years, my son has asked to purchase that book for others, and we have bought 4 or 5 of them.
David was right, it always brings a tear to my eye...
Prayers to the family.

I went to school with David and Chris. My mom called me today to tell me about David's passing. She hit the nail on the head...She said, "Didn't you run around with David Van Meter? Isn't he that really nice boy that had the little brother your age? I always thought he was a good looking boy. This picture looks just like him -only older." She's right, David was that really nice boy that I ran around with in junior high. Wow...to have made such an impression as a pre-teen boy that my mother would remember him all these years later...We all lose touch with each other as the years go by, but David (and Chris) are two of my "childhood friends" that I'll never forget. David was always kind, had a great voice that was somehow different than most (it may have been b/c we were in junior high)and was one of the few kids that I admired because of his belief in God and faith.
My only regret is that I did not get to visit with David who I am sure became everything that I imagine him to be as a man.
God bless your family,
Melissa Pittillo

David was a brilliant, funny, generous man with a smile that would light up anyone's day. He was a wonderful friend and colleague and an excellent writer and editor who was brave enough to give his honest opinion of my writing (and he was right!). I will never forget his great laugh and his bright blue eyes.I am so sorry for his loss.

I knew David breifly as I hired him in January. However, I got a chance to know him well over the past two months. He was a very kind and giving person and was extremely proud of his kids. My condolences to David's family and his fiance'.

We are shocked and saddened by this incredible loss. David's smile, sense of humor and magnetic personality will be missed by so many. Our love and prayers go out to all who have been touched by David.
