Frederick Goggans
October 23, 1950 - October 31, 2022
Camden, Maine - Frederick C. "Rick" Goggans, MD, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, in his sleep on the morning of October 31 at his residence in Camden, Maine.
At the time of his death Dr. Goggans was Medical Director of McLean Borden Cottage, a facility affiliated with Harvard Medical School where he was Lecturer in Psychiatry. Dr. Goggans was also active within the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians and had affiliations with Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, ME and Northern Light Acadia Hospital in Bangor, ME. In 2021, he was appointed by Maine Governor Janet T. Mills to serve on the Board of Licensure in Medicine. Dr. Goggans was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a lifelong member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Goggans was valued by family, friends, patients and colleagues for his keen thoughtfulness and kindness which was always backed by sharp intellect, dry wit, and inexhaustible work ethic and integrity.
He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on October 23, 1950 to Eliza ("Diane") Goggans, MD and Albert Goggans, MD. Growing up in the Westcliff area of town, he enjoyed playing in the fields and creeks that once were part of the Edwards Ranch. As valedictorian of the first graduating class of Trinity Valley School in 1967, he left at 16 for Amherst College, and subsequently graduated with honors from Baylor College of Medicine. Post graduate training followed at the University of California San Francisco and Stanford University. He practiced psychiatry in Fort Worth from 1981 until 1999 when he relocated with his family to Camden, Maine.
He was a former member of Shady Oaks and River Crest Country Clubs of Fort Worth, the Steeplechase Club of Fort Worth, and the Williams and Princeton Clubs of New York City.
He is survived by his spouse of 46 years, Catherine McCrimmon Goggans, son Nicholas ("Nick") of Fort Worth, TX and his wife Brooke, and son Ryan of Liberty, ME. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eliza and Watson Goggans of Fort Worth, his sister Margie ("Tinker") Goggans and her husband Russ Sikes, nieces, Chloe Latham Sikes, Eva Sikes, and Robin Sikes, his sister-in-law Amy McCrimmon Jackson and her husband Vahl, and nephews Luke Simon and Will Simon.
