Gus Bates Obituary

Gus Tom Bates III

November 3, 1942 - August 4, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas - Gus Bates passed away peacefully Sunday evening, August 4th, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 81.

Born and raised in Fort Worth, Gus was a beacon of community spirit and leadership. A proud graduate of Paschal High School, class of 1961, Gus excelled as both a football player and Class President. His journey continued at Texas A&M, where he studied pre-med and played baseball, before graduating from TCU in 1966.

It was at TCU that he met the love of his life, Sheryl Stewart. They married on December 18th, 1965, and built a beautiful family with their two cherished children, Gus Stewart Bates and Allana "Cherie" Bates Robinson.

Shortly after graduation, Gus embarked on a successful insurance career with John Hancock. His dedication and hard work quickly established him as one of John Hancock's top agents. As a result of his success with John Hancock, Gus founded The Gus Bates Company with his son, Gus Stewart. The company thrived, growing to over 60 employees and earning the title of Best Small Company in Fort Worth for two consecutive years.

Gus was passionate about sports, playing football at Paschal High and baseball at Texas A&M. His love for the game continued with many years of flag football, culminating in his induction into the Texas Flag Football Hall of Fame in 1984. More than a player, Gus was a dedicated coach, mentoring children in football, baseball, and basketball for over 30 years. Known affectionately as "Pops" and "Coach," he inspired countless young athletes with his commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship.

A pillar of the Fort Worth community, Gus generously volunteered his time to numerous organizations. He served as a Board Member for the Epilepsy Foundation, Boys & Girls Club, Cancer Society, and as President of the Youth Sports Council, which serves over eight thousand children. As Chairman of the Board for the Fort Worth Easter Seals Center, Gus played a pivotal role in merging the Dallas and Fort Worth offices, enhancing services for special needs children in North Texas. He and his son also helped establish The Gus Bates Center at Paschal High School, ensuring top-notch facilities for future athletes.

Gus was renowned for his wisdom and wit, often sharing his life philosophies through his "Gus-isms." Phrases like "Give, Give and Get," "You can't hit the ball with the bat on your shoulder," "Leave everything in life better than you found it" and "Don't tell me how much you know, show me how much you care" encapsulated his approach to life and endeared him to all who knew him.

Gus was preceded in death by his father, Gus Bates Jr.; his mother, Tommye Johnson Bates; and his daughter, Allana "Cherie" Bates Robinson.

In addition to his devoted wife, Sheryl, who lovingly cared for him during his illness, Gus is survived by his son, Gus Stewart Bates, and his wife, Sarah; grandchildren, Kali Purselley, Chloe Robinson Hodges, and husband, Rylan, Cassidy Bates Duwe, and her husband, Gibson, and Cooper Bates; great-grandson, Aries Gus Chrzanowski; sisters, Peggy Lewis, and her husband Gary, and Candi Proctor, and her husband, Ronnie; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved caregivers, Rico Ferrell and Debra Norris.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 am Friday, August 9, in the Sanctuary at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3701 Birchman Avenue, officiated by Rev. Dr. Ted Kitchens. A reception will follow the service at the Legends Club at TCU. He will be laid to rest privately with his parents in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Bearers for the service are Drew Proctor, Dustin Proctor, Shane Proctor, Gary Joe Lewis, Bud Durden, Paul Knuckley, Paul S. Faidley Jr., Albert Archer, John Young, Mike Frederick, Odie Dollins, Ronnie Simpson, James Ford and Bobby Sanders and Honorary Bearer, Josh Hoover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or to the All Church Home.

I can still see Gus walking down the halls at Paschal greeting almost everyone by name with that wonderful smile in place. What an inspiration to many of us!
He cared about those he knew and would go out of his way to help strangers.
Telephoning him was a great experience. He´d give updates on all the folks that were mutual friends. It was like he had an organization chart for each friendship.
When we last talked he didn´t dwell on his own health issues but instead wanted to know about our family. Always passing out encouragement with every call.
His spirit will linger with all of us. Makes me smile to think of our him.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be one of the many kids lucky enough to have played under Coach Bates.

If you played for Coach, you were going to compete, work hard and play the game the right way...life lessons he instilled in thousands of Fort Worth kids.

Coach´s booming voice, encouraging us to "get the bat off your shoulder" or "be a pitcher, not a thrower!" have stayed with me forever.

To Mrs. Bates, Gus, Sarah and family, so sorry for your loss. Coach Bates is a true Fort Worth legend.

Our love and prayers are with the Bates family. I was blessed to know the family as so many in the neighborhood. Later in life we were brothers in the fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Will cherish the memories and all the good times.

Who was he ( Gus Bates) soft voice and a true gentle giant. In the hearts of many, You Will Be Missed.

Take comfort in knowing, you will always be the bridge that crossed me over.

I met Gus when we were both new freshmen at Texas A&M. I wanted to go home in Ft. Worth but did not have a car. Another total stranger introduced me to Gus and he immediately offered me a ride to Ft Worth. Turns out he also offered a ride to several others. We all piled into his two door Chevrolet and headed home. I think there were 6 or 7 of us piled into that car. As we all know, Gus never missed an opportunity to help another person. Gus was special in so many ways.

I am 60 years old, and almost every time I saw Gus over the last half-century, he would communicate to whoever was around that I was the hardest-hitting kid he ever coached. He didn't say I was one of the best, because I am sure I wasn't, but he found one of the things I did well and acknowledged me for it. This was not a testament not to my skill but to his unwavering encouragement and ability to see the best in those around him.

Gus Bates was more than a coach; he was a beacon of positivity and strength, always lifting up the young men he guided in Fort Worth. His life was a reflection of the Fruits of the Spirit, and his legacy is one of kindness, encouragement, and humility.

One of the greatest tributes one can provide another is the desire to be more like them. I want to be more like Gus Bates. And I know that I am not alone! "Well done, good and faithful servant." Mathew 25:23

Gus was my friend and John Hancock rep. We always talked more sports than business. First time I met Gus he was in my front yard playing baseball catch with my young son. I could not tell who was having the most fun. May you Rest in Peace Gus!

Mr. Bates will be missed by so many people.

Mr. Bates was outstanding in more ways than can be described.

He was always willing to help his fellow man - and had a giant heart for the needs of others. He was a fierce competitor and he instilled in so many of us he coached the passion to win and the determination to work hard for it.

God Speed Mr. Bates! You will be missed!

I am proud to say, Gus has been my boss for 25 years. I learned so much from him in the art of being a good listener and going the extra mile with our clients. Gus was so well respected by all who knew him and worked for him. One of my favorite memories is how Gus would buy valentine cards and write a note and deliver to each of us personally and read it to us. He also included a box of chocolates to share. I cannot express how much he will be missed. May God Bless and comfort Sheryl and all the Bates family.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the Gus Bates annual golf event about 15 years ago. Gus and his friends knew how to plan a trip that was always memorable. Gus seemed to know everyone in Ft Worth. Even though I only had the pleasure of Gus´s friendship for a few years, I am proud to say that I was a friend of his. A thoughtful and kind man who will be sorely missed by all of his friends and family.
