Imogene Humber Obituary

Imogene Armstrong Humber, 81, of Hubbard died unexpectedly at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, while surrounded by family.

Imogene "Jeanie" was a leap year baby, born Feb. 29, 1924, in Pampa to T.S. and Mary Armstrong. The family moved several times before settling in Odessa. They moved to Abilene in 1940, where they made their home.

Imogene graduated from Abilene High School in 1941 with her future husband, W.E. "Dub" Humber. They attended Tarleton Junior College in Stephenville before he dropped out to serve his country in the defense industry. Imogene worked in several different banks, and after a four-year courtship she and Dub were married in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1945. They moved back to Texas in 1946, settling in Fort Worth where they lived until his job transferred him to Grand Prairie as manager of Lone Star Gas Co.

Dub and Jeanie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. He died in May of that year from a rare disease, amyloidosis.

Four children were born to Dub and Jeanie, all in Fort Worth. During their school years Jeanie was very involved in their activities, serving as room mother chairman and troop leader for Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts. She was also active in PTA and received a lifetime membership. Imogene additionally volunteered for Goodfellows in Fort Worth, and was a charter member of the Grand Prairie Community Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered for many years and served as president in 1978–1979. She also worked with the chamber of commerce and YMCA of Grand Prairie.

Imogene and Dub belonged to Rolling Hills Country Club, where they were avid golfers. They also enjoyed RV travel throughout the United States and Canada. Imogene enjoyed spending time with her family, especially fishing, hiking and picnicking around Texas and Lake City, Colo., where they spent many family vacations. Following Dub's death, Jeanie moved to Hubbard in September 2001, where she quickly settled into country life. While there, Jeanie enjoyed long walks, mowing her four acres, evenings on the porch and many card games with family and friends.

Survivors: Her brother, Tommy Armstrong; her daughter, Nancy K. Trick Poynor; son, William Lee Humber and wife, Barbara; son, Stanley Harold Humber and wife, Tricia; son, Stephen Alan Humber and wife, Terri; grandchildren, Andrea "Mook," Amilia "Ami," Abigail, Brett, David, Spencer, William and Alison Humber. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, W.E. "Dub" Humber; sister, Alta Lee "Ottie" Gooch; and brothers, Don and Harold Armstrong.
