Arlington, Texas - John Ira Thurmond, Jr., born on July 21, 1949, passed away surrounded by family on July 25, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. He was born in San Antonio, and later moved to Arlington where he graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1968.
John married the love of his life, Jenny Thurmond, in 1968, and they had three children together followed by seven grandchildren. John was a retail and wholesale car dealer, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, music, and living life to the fullest.
He was a great provider, father to many more than his own children and grandchildren, and was the backbone of his large family. He loved his family passionately, and his grandchildren affectionately called him "Big." He will always be remembered and greatly missed.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jenny Thurmond; Children: John Thurmond, III, M.D. and wife, Wendy Thurmond; Joseph Thurmond; Julie Shehane and husband, John Shehane; Grandchildren: Cole Thurmond, John Thurmond, IV, Sydney Thurmond, Noah Shehane, Maggie Thurmond, Jack Thurmond, and Benjamin Shehane; Sister Suzanne Turner and husband, Lynn Turner, as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, John Thurmond, Sr. and Helen Thurmond, as well as both brothers, Leslie Thurmond and Robyn Thurmond.
A Celebration of Life was held at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas on August 2, 2023.
