Melanie DeWitt Obituary

Melanie Mercer DeWitt, 56, of Burleson, an office manager for her husband's dental practice, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, in Fort Worth.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Burleson Church of Christ. Interment: Burleson Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mountain Valley Funeral Home.
Memorials: St. Jude Children's Hospital, Susan B. Komen For the Cure, or charity of choice.
Melanie was born Aug. 22, 1952, at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth to Roy Silas and Faye Parks Mercer. She graduated from Burleson High School in 1970. She attended North Texas State University where she met her husband, Dr. Gene T. DeWitt, and eventually settled in her hometown of Burleson. There they raised their family and developed many long and lasting friendships. Melanie's real passion was her family. All events and occasions centered around family. Be it birthdays, holidays or ski trips, they always revolved around family and her treasured friends. Melanie's truest passion was being a mother and wife. Even as sickness intruded into her life she remained the cornerstone of her family. Throughout the duration of her illness, she amazed all of those who met her and cared for her with her tremendous sense of hope and passion for life.
We deeply appreciate the kindness and care Melanie and our family recieved from her physicians, Dr. Mark Redrow and Dr. Joyce O'shaunessy, and their staffs at Texas Oncology.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Silas Mercer Sr.; mother, Faye Parks Mercer; and a loving niece, Patty Mercer.
Survivors: Husband, Gene DeWitt; son, Eric DeWitt; daughters, Erin and Adrienne DeWitt; brother, Roy Silas Mercer Jr. and wife, Mary; sister, Patty Mercer Hood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene I was just thinking about you and Melanie and wondering how you all were doing. I stumbled on to Melanie's obituary. I am so very very sorry to hear about her passing. If I would have know I would have come to the services. I was so in hopes that she would beat the cancer. I last talked to her right around when my daughter was getting married in 2006. I am just devistated. I know it has been hard for you and your children as she was a great person. I am sorry I was horrible about keeping in touch. I love you guys and miss seeing you all. Send my best to your children and I hope you are all doing OK.

I am very sorry to hear about Melanie. I remember her as my next-door neighbor, a young mother devoted to her family. She thoroughly enjoyed God's creations and took great pride in her home. Often, early in the morning she would be in her yard, caring for her flowers. My son, Brad, recently related to me how, years ago, she had called him over to her car and proudly showed him her new baby girl (Adrienne).
I know your hearts are heavy at this time. May the promise of Jesus Christ at John 5:28,29 bring you comfort and strength.

Dear Adrienne-

I just wanted you to know that Rodney and I have and are even more now praying for you and your family as you pass through these hours of grief, sadness, uncertainity and even some relief. I lost my mother Sept of 2001 to cancer. It is a very hard thing to watch and participate in losing someone you love so much, but there is the hope in knowing there is no more pain and no more suffering now. I am afraid that the days can be harder on those of us left behind. If you ever need to talk to someone, call me. Philippians 4:4-7. Grace to you and your family, Rodney & Dana DeLozier

Mrs. DeWitt was an incredible person. I remember some years ago when I worked at Bransom’s and she would come in with her children. She was the nicest costumers I had ever come across. She would talk about her family’s’ plans to go skiing and other activities. I also remember when she started her battle with her illness. I recall my mother had helped and supported Melanie through her beginnings of her illness. May you find God's comfort and strength during this difficult time.
God Bless.
