Nancy Shelton Obituary

Nancy "Nan" Blasdel Shelton NEW ORLEANS, LA.--She faced through a young widowhood to marry J. Howard Shelton, a living legend with whom she, frankly, held her own. Often, and more by example, she taught her two beloved daughters, Kathryn and Carolyn, that proper manners are an "always," to dress with chic and a touch of flair, how to entertain with both warmth and style, and perhaps most telling, that a given honor of serving a charity, school or church, meant your commitment to serious, hard work. Nancy "Nan" Blasdel Shelton died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, surrounded by her family. Born a little over 85 years earlier, on Sept. 29, 1933, in Richmond, Texas, Nan was a fourth-generation Texan, daughter of Joe and Lena Blasdel, and the widow of J. Howard Shelton, a civic leader and banking executive (First National Bank) in Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Shelton was a graduate of Texas Woman's University, with a BSN degree in nursing, scoring the highest then recorded on the state board exams. She practiced nursing for several years, before beginning a second career in 1980, founding her own business, Assets, Appraisal, and Sales, Inc., appraising antiques and residential contents. Mrs. Shelton would later serve a three-year term as the president of The International Society of Appraisers. Mrs. Shelton was active in various Fort Worth civic and educational organizations, including the Fort Worth Country Day School. She was a board member of the Child Study Center, Jewel Charity Ball, and Planned Parenthood. SURVIVORS: She is survived by her daughters and their extended families, her daughter, Kathryn Shelton Carmean and her husband, Canon Dr. E.A. Carmean Jr., of Washington, D.C., and; granddaughter, Elizabeth Carmean Adams and her husband, Wayne Adams, and great-grandchildren, Abigail and John Adams, of North Potomac, Md.; and her daughter, Carolyn Shelton Fitzpatrick and son-in-law, Brian C. Fitzpatrick, and grandchildren, Mary Kathryn, Christopher, and Sarah Fitzpatrick, of New Orleans. MEMORIAL SERVICE: Her life will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 13, at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans, La., and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. A private burial will take place in Greenwood Park in Fort Worth. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Fort. Worth Foundation, 800 W. Fifth St., or Cook Children's Medical Center, 801 7th Ave.

I still miss Nan and our Sunday phone calls. So often I wish I could ask her an appraisal question or her opinion. She was a wonderful friend and mentor to me.

Nan was a good hearted mentor and friend to me in New Orleans. It was always fun to talk to another Texan at the Neal Auction and HNOC parties. I had a great lunch with her at Martin's the summer of 2016, just before my own move back to Texas. I was glad to know her.

Nan was such a paragon of elegance and calmness, even when her duties as Board Chairman, International Society of Appraisers, proved stressful. Her decisions were always well-considered, she always retained her innate dignity and yet she was able to guide the Board and the organization though a very difficult period. I will miss her knowledge of antiques, her ability to handle administrative difficulties, and certainly her friendship. Former Board Member, Daphne Rosenzweig

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

Nan and I always enjoyed our encounters at estate sales she conducted in Fort Worth.
I gained much from her expertise in the field.

Dear Carolyn, Kathryn and the family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Nan and I were first appraisal colleagues and became friends. I thank her often for encouraging me to do things that I would not have otherwise done and to believe in my abilities. She was a great lady, was very accomplished and with high standards, the world was a better place for her being in it.

Nan was a wonderful friend and person. I learned much from her and will miss our regular telephone visits that started with her move to New Orleans. My prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Carolyn. Though I didn't know your mother, she sounds like an amazingly wonderful lady, having accomplished so much in her life! Knowing you, I'm certain the accomplishments she was most proud of was you and your sister. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.
