Art, I remember all the years we swam together for the Gahanna Sea Lions. You were a HUGE part of my childhood and I remember you fondly. I still remember the day you climbed up on the roof of your house and started dancing. Don't remember why, but there it is. Rest in peace, and God keep your family in His hand.

Art, Thank you for your kindness on the sidelines. When the game was going Notre Dame's way, you were just as kind as when it was going the other way. I worked the sidelines and Cartier Field as a kid. Thank you for your positive words gestures on the sidelines. It helped me reach my goals.
Sincerely,
Jim Pettit

Art was unique, a great fun guy, exceptional athlete and free spirit. I'll never forget him walking to class at ND, balancing on the fence wires. He was our generation's Golden Boy & Gipp rolled into one. Farewell #23, you will be missed by all who knew you, or who ever had the joy to watch you play the game of football for the Fighting Irish. Condolences to you family on your great loss.

I was very sad to hear of Art's passing. I remember speaking with him on the phone just a couple of years ago. It is very much like him to not let on that his health wasn't great.
As a classmate and athlete at Hartley, Art and I were always seen as the top athletes in the class. He was such a good athlete, I tried to convince him to give up wrestling as a senior and play basketball, even though he hadn't played since grade school! He could even do pirouettes on the pommel horse, something I had only seen Olympic gymnasts do.
I know some people looked on him as just a jock, but Art was always one of the smartest kids in any of the classes we took.
I can also remember when we would go to the gym during lunch, he was always amazed how I could shoot, but I always loved it when he would guard me one-on-one because of the way he challenged me.
And every once in a while, he would surprise you and just hang out and talk about anything.
Art was truly unique and someone I will never forget.
I am so sorry for your loss, he was truly a remarkable individual.
May God Grant him eternal rest and bless you all with His Infinite Compsassion.

Art was a truly gifted athlete …. and he could play a mean game of Euker. Art and I did quite well at ND, taking on all challengers in Cavanaugh Hall (Eric Penick included). He was majoring in Architecture at the time. How he handled the workload, I have no idea. I have fond memories of those years. Thanks Art.

I was a junior at Notre Dame when Art, a sophomore in 1972, got his first varsity carry--a scintillating 56 yard TD. The next week, he got his second carry--an equally impressive 54 yard TD. Not a bad start! What a tremendously talented athlete. He was the talk of campus after those two runs. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. I wish that I had met him.

I never met Art, but his teammate at Notre Dame Rich Allocco talked about Art with great fondness. On Eric Penick's 85 yard run v. USC, Art singlehandedly demolished the right side of SC's D-Line with a tremendous block that took out two defenders and clogged the pursuit of SC's LBers. In the National Championship game v. Alabama, I can still hear Chris Schenkel say at LHB "Art Best, a marvelous runner." Thank you for the wonderful memories Art. Bless your heart and soul.

Art was a year behind us at Bishop Hartley and was our running back on one of Hartley's greatest teams of the 70's. His athletic abilities were outstanding and was a great guy to be around. I was proud to be a member of the team that allowed Art to be the leading scorer in Franklin County in '71. He was a great guy and am proud of what he grew up to be! My God shine his light on Art and hold him in the palm of his hand. My prayers go out to all the Best family. God bless each of you!
