Burl Childress Obituary

CHILDRESS Burl Childress Sr., born July 2, 1937, passed away May 15, 2010. Member of Gates Fourth U.M.C. where he founded the Community Breakfast, an example of his life-long advocacy for the needy and oppressed. Retired from Simmons Mattress after 40 years service, and 27 years president of the Upholsterers Union 424/USW. Preceded in death by parents Clyde Henry and Louisa, and five brothers and sisters. Survived by loving wife, Barbara "Bobbie"; sons, Burl Jr. (Mindi), Ricky (Jenny), Michael, Randy (Melissa); 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother; four sisters; many other family and a host of dear friends. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gates Fourth United Methodist Church, 119 E. Gates St., and one hour prior to the funeral service which will be 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Pam Brater officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements by COOK & SON-PALLAY FUNERAL HOME.

Burl was a caring and generous man. Unlike many of us that look at what we can "get and have", Burl wanted to serve and provide to others. If Burl knew of someone that was hungry he would find the food to give it to them. Burl is in heaven now and free of his pain.
