Gone from sight but not from memory.

March 13, 2011

March 13, 2011,

Dear Lee Ellen and Dean,
Yesterday I heard of Charlie's passing from Linda Connell, ASRS. I was shocked and so saddened as I had tried
to call him several times within the
last year. He and Lillian were my
specially treasured friends, both in
aviation and in the dog world. We
shared these two intense interests and
loves and our concerns about both.

We missed them terribly when they moved
back to Ohio, and I was able to visit
them several times thereafter. Charlie
and I always met for a pow wow when he
came back on ASRS events and meetings.

It is a shock and a blow to lose them,
and I send my deepest condolences to
you and your family. Words cannot truly
express the grief I feel at losing them to this world.

May they be together joyfully in the next world with all their whippets around them.

All the best,

Janet Hitt

I was so sorry to hear of Charles Billing's death. I first met him and Lillian in 1967 when first visiting the U.S. We shared a deep interest in dogs, especially Whippets, and stayed in touch through the years. Charles' services to the American Whippet Club were of inestimable value. He will be geatly missed.

Charlie Billlings was one of the best "hires" I made in 12 years as Chair of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Ohio State. His range of expertise in medicine, aerospace science, human physiological and cognitive functioning -and many others - made him a valued resource for our research, teaching and service mission. His long-time friendship with many of my faculty, his droll sense of humor, and his "fatherly" care for students endeared him to students and faculty alike.

Dr. Billlinge seved our nation and the university he loved with distinction and excellence. We will miss him. I miss him.

Peace,
George L. Smith
Professor Emeritus and former Chair
Integrated Systems Engineering
