CLEGHORN David Fred Cleghorn, age 90, of Homewood, AL and New Albany, OH, died Saturday, April 5, 2008. Fred was born in Huntsville, AL, September 10, 1917, to James Henry and Lavada (Spurlock) Cleghorn. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ida Mae (Clark), mother of his six children, his sister Ruth and her husband Sedrick Frost, his brother James Daniel Cleghorn, and brother-in-law Roland Throneberry. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Houston) (Stooke) Cleghorn of New Albany, OH; his sister, Dorcas Throneberry of Huntsville, AL; and sister-in-law, Estelle Cleghorn of Augusta, GA; also by his sons, David Jr. of Homewood, AL, Ronald of Huntsville, AL, Stephen (and wife, Lucinda) of Reynoldsville, PA, Robert (and wife, Margie) of Macon, GA, Richard of Jacksonville, FL; and his daughter, Mary Frances of Homewood, AL. He leaves behind an extended family that includes Elizabeth's daughters, Elizabeth (and husband, James) Cullinan of New Albany, OH, Jane (and husband, Eric) Beatty of Baltimore, MD, and Susan (and husband, Jeffrey) Powell of Gahanna, OH; as well as his grandchildren, Rebecca (and husband, Kenneth) Tannehill, John (and wife, Krista) Mikos, Claire Agnes Doerrman, Patricia (and partner, Jae) Carmody, David Joshua (and wife, Jennifer) Cleghorn, Marisa (and partner, Eamon Glennon) Cleghorn and Jennalee Cleghorn; Elizabeth's grandchildren, Ethan and Evan Cullinan, Dylan and Georgia and Sam Beatty, James and Ben Powell; and his great-grandchildren, Katie and Annelise and Teddy and Mei Li Mikos, Seamus Patrick and Sean Doerrman, Mariah and Cheyenne Carmody, Sage Ella and Adler Cleghorn. Fred was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII in the 102nd Infantry Division where he was injured in combat in Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After the war he re-enlisted in the Army for what became a twenty year career mostly in the Corps of Engineers, where he rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer III over tours of duty that included posts in Georgia, France, Germany, Guam, Virginia, and Greenland. After his Army service he worked mainly as an architect's inspector on commercial building projects including the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville and UAB in Birmingham. Some years after the passing of his first wife Ida, after 42 years of marriage, Fred married Elizabeth and lived in New Albany, OH, for the past 15 years. Most recently Fred was a member of Resurrection Church in New Albany, OH where he enjoyed the fellowship of the "back row gang", and before that, was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, AL. Family will receive friends Thursday evening, April 10th from 5-7 p.m. at RIDOUT'S VALLEY CHAPEL in Homewood, AL, followed by a wake and rosary service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday, April 11th at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church followed by burial with military honors at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
