Donald Streibig Obituary

Streibig, Donald R.
1926 - 2018
Donald Ray Streibig, 91, died peacefully on Thursday, April 26th, 2018. Don was born November 12,1926 to the late Ray and Helen (Schroer) Streibig. He was raised in Cincinnati and graduated from Western Hills High School in 1944. Being too young to enlist, Don enrolled in Heidelberg college where he served as editor of the school newspaper and graduated in 1948 with a BA in English. Don's post graduate work at Bowling Green State University resulted in a MA in Theatre in 1950. Soon thereafter while working at King's College, Don met a young British travel agent named Joan Meacock. They were married in 1952 and their union was blessed with one son. Together they made their home in Munich, Germany until moving to Columbus in 1967. Professionally, Don served in a military and civilian role with the U.S. Army from 1952-67, first as Entertainment Director for Munich, Germany, then as Chief of Soldier Shows for Europe. In 1967 Don returned stateside to become Executive Director for the Ohio Arts Council and subsequently Executive Director of the Ohio Theatre and CAPA. The massive Ohio Theatre renovation project was completed during Don's tenure. Don ended his professional career as Executive Director of the New Brunswick Cultural Center in New Jersey. Additionally, Don found time to direct more than 60 college and community theatre productions, and served as consultant for and treasurer of the League of Historic American Theatres. Don lived life fully. His interests were many including architecture, art, books, films, classical music, opera, gourmet cooking and travel. He traveled the world and made friends wherever he landed. He will be remembered for his energy, his keen intellect, his amazing ability to maintain friendships all over the world, his kind words of support, and his delicious homemade German desserts. Don was predeceased by his mother and father, his beloved wife, Joan (Meacock) Streibig and cherished son, Paul Streibig. He is survived by his brother, Glenn Streibig (Jawanna); brother-in-law, Tony Meacock; daughter-in-law, Patricia Streibig; grandson, Edward Streibig (Catherine); and a host of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St, on Saturday, May 19th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to First Congregational Church or the Columbus International Program. Please visit

I am saddened to hear of Don´s passing. We met through St. Marks Church where my father, Dean Hutchings was the choir director and mother, Jackie Hutchings was youth group leader. Paul was also a friend of mine.

Don was such a kind and generous man.

Dear Streibig Family,

Don made friends all around the world and we are one of them. We live in New Zealand and have had Don visit us on several occasions. As a frequent traveler to the Columbus area, we have been fortunate to meet up with him on a regular basis. He was a very special man and it was a blessing to have known him. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Don's family at this sad time.

Goodbye our dear friend you will be sorely missed. It has been an honour to have been part of your life. Our lives have been truly enriched through your friendship. May you rest in peace.

Dear Streibig family,

I got to know Don almost 10 years ago. We connected with each other through the Northwest Counseling Older Adults Program back in June of 2009. Don had been serving as one of their volunteers. After he was assigned to me we went grocery shopping once a week. As time went by Don and I expanded our activities. We went to Greaeer's Ice Cream store and sometimes took in audio-described movies at the Ohio Theater. Then Don introduced me to the Wednesday Morning Fellowship at First Community Church. Together we shared that interest until this March.

Several of the men from First Community Church visited Don at Mayfair Village. They kept the other men well informed about Don's declining health.

It was a pleasure to have known and shared time with Don. I want to extend my sympathy to everyone. May you find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
