Eugene D'Angelo Obituary

D'Angelo, Jr., Eugene C. "Gene"
Eugene C. "Gene" D'Angelo Jr. passed away November 19, 2018 with family members at his bedside. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Priscilla Smith D'Angelo. He is survived by his children, Jeff (Susie Frank), Beverly, Tim (Elizabeth Gill), Tony (Colleen); and grandchildren, Nick (Claire), Perry, Christopher, Courtney, Catie D'Angelo, Anton and Olivia Pacino. For the past 6 years, Kauser Parveen, a true angel on earth, provided unconditional love, support and care for Gene. She was always there for him and for that our family is forever grateful. Gene has had a tremendous impact on the Central Ohio business and music community. An accomplished musician on the tuba, string bass, and trombone, Gene joined the Tony Pastor Orchestra while still in high school. After graduating, he attended The Ohio State University where he performed in the concert and marching bands, dotted the 'I' at the OSU stadium, and helped found the OSU Jazz Forum. He also wrote the Linden McKinley High School alma mater. He served as Chairman of both the Columbus Association of the Performing Arts (CAPA) and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, where his vision and leadership raised both organizations to new heights. His broadcasting career spanned nearly four decades starting with Taft Broadcasting in 1955. He joined the WBNS Stations in 1972 as the executive vice president of broadcast operations, and general manager for both television and radio. Gene brought a forward-looking, innovative approach to broadcasting. He introduced the 24-hour news format to Central Ohio and built one of the first fully computerized newsrooms in the country. Under his leadership, WBNS-TV was one of the first television stations in the U.S. to use MiniCam coverage, live telecasts from helicopters, and computerized weather graphics. Gene D'Angelo was an instrumental figure in facilitating Columbus Day celebrations throughout the 60's 70's, 80's, & 90's in Columbus, Ohio. He also played an integral part in the Quincentennial celebration in 1992 and spearheaded the Christopher Columbus Santa Maria project. Friends and family are invited to join a celebration of life at the Athletic Club of Columbus, 136 E. Broad St. on Saturday, March 16, 2019. A tribute will begin promptly 1pm followed by a reception. Valet parking provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ohio University School of Music, Priscilla And Eugene D'Angelo Undergraduate Fellowship for Violin, The School of Music, Athens, Ohio 45701.

I would like to thank all who come to this page with their hearts full of appreciation for my father.
My brothers Jeff, Tim,Tony and I are comforted by your kind words.. We are so proud of the contributions our father made to this community, and equally proud of his unending efforts to make things better for everyone whose life he touched.
My father was motivated by love and pursued joy and celebration every chance he could find.
We hope that you will follow in his example of fierce devotion to family and friends , pride in one's authenticity ,appreciation for the unique qualities in others -and most of all- the love of music. Keep a little Gene in your heart!
Love and gratitude from:
Gene's daughter, Beverly.

Gene was a friend and mentor when I began my career in fundraising at the Columbus Symphony in 1980. I served as his assistant when he chaired the CSO's 1981 Fund Drive, and what I learned under Gene's tutelage has carried me thru my work in the nonprofit world to this day. Plus, he was just a fun person to be around. And devoted to Priscilla, whom I had the pleasure of knowing via her devoted service as a member of the CSO Women's Association. It's a cliche, but in Gene's case, very true: they broke the mold when they made him. My condolences to his family.

I so wish that I could be with you all at this time. I'm so sure you've got so many memories and are having so many laughs!!! I loved your Mom and I always felt so close to her and I have always been in awe of your Dad! He was a force!!! I would run into him a lot, just around town, at the drug store picking up stuff for your Mom and he would always come up to me, I know you! He was such a bright light and visionary and was so very proud of his children. My heart is with you all, Jeff, Bev, Tim and Tony.
Love, Liz Pierce Doyle

I have a lot of memories of Gene through the last 50 years. We were in Vaud-Villities together and followed Bob Allen and his trio together at the Oold Christopher Inn, along with First Community Church. The meetings didn't stop as I had a drama workshop at First Community and two of my "funny girls" were Diane Frick and Beverly. What a two-some. Years later, my Imaginating Dramatics Company inherited Nick, such a good performer. Gene and Priscilla didn't miss a performance when Nick was involved. He was a good man, whose family came first. I will miss his sunny ways. God Bless You Gene. Shakespeare said it best, "Take him and cut him out in little stars and he will make the face of heaven shine so bright that no one will pay heed to the garish sun."(paraphrased)

Mr. D'Angelo was a huge influence on me as I began my musical journey. His encouragement and praise of my efforts meant the world to me in my teens when other "grown ups" were dismissing playing in a high school rock 'n roll band as a waste of time. At his house I was introduced to big band music, jazz and Dixie Land. When Duke Ellington came to town, he made sure we were there at the old Grandview Inn.
I know he touched many lives in a very positive way. God Bless You, Mr. D'Angelo. Rest in Peace.
