Mr. Houghton gave me my first job when I was a teenager in 1975. I was the second person he hired to work at Wilderness Trace. His kindness and paternal attitude towards the young people he hired like myself, had a huge impact on the course our all of our lives. Mr. Houghton was a deeply decent man whose love of the outdoors and business savvy drew people together and made the world a better place. He may have passed 11 years ago as I now write this, but the positive impact of his life still is felt. He left his children and grandchildren a legacy that they may more than proud of.
I remember Mr. Houghton with gratitude and respect. 47 years later I am also still using the gear that he so generously sold me with a 40% employee discount.
Photo taken the summer of 1976 while off in the Tetons with Rick Adler (another employee of Mr. Houghton's) climbing.
