Helga Muladore Obituary

Muladore Helga Muladore, 97, of Worthington, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born on March 12, 1920 in Landsberg/Lech, Germany to Heinrich and Margarethe (Becker) Manns. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband US Army Lt. Col. Robert W. Muladore of Powell (Ohio). She is survived by her sister, Ingrid Young who lives in northeast Ohio. Helga will be deeply missed by her children, Ingrid (John) Robechek, Eric (Anne) Muladore, Kerstin (Ronald) Noland, and Nils (Stacey) Muladore; her grandson, Logan (Li Li) Muladore; two step-granddaughters, Lisa and Cara (Donald); and three step-great grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by her beloved rescue dog, Ralphy. Helga grew up and graduated secondary school in Schleusingen, Germany. She worked as a translator for the American Military Government in Regensburg, Germany, following World War II where she met and married Robert. She immigrated to the US in 1947 and became a US citizen. While living in Delaware (Ohio) she worked as an assistant for the German Department of Ohio Wesleyan University and obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Education at age 49. After Robert's death in 1973 she moved to Worthington where she lived for the past 41 years. She worked for Columbus Public Schools for 18 years as a German and English teacher at Northland High School where she positively influenced many students and was a beloved faculty member and mentor before retiring in 1988. She enjoyed traveling internationally and to the Rocky Mountains, reading, discussing politics, gardening, cooking, and especially spending time with her family, friends, neighbors and dogs. In addition to German and English, Helga also spoke Russian, French and Spanish. She liked keeping up with the latest technology and regularly used Skype, Facetime and e-mail to stay in touch with family and friends around the world until her passing. No public services will be held at this time. The family requests contributions in Helga's memory be made to either CHA Animal Shelter (chaanimalshelter.org/donate/), WOSU Public Media (wosu.org/support/), or Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio (secure.ppaction.org/site/Donation2). In 1975 Northlands Theater Dept was putting on "The Diary of Anne Frank". Mr Lewis brought in Ms Muladore to speak to us about what Germany was like during that time. She told us about people living in hiding and the suffering all around. She taught us how to correctly pronounce the names; Pater not Peter, Fraunk not Frank. It left a lasting impression on this 16 year old girl.
Now to see her politics mirror mine, makes me even more proud to have known her.
What an amazing life.

My deepest condolences to her family. I had Frau Muladore for German at NHS during 81-83. The advanced German classes had so few pupils they had to combine into one class with I believe German 3, 4 and 5 in one room. She taught us so much about life in another country and how good we have it here in the USA. I will always have fond memories of those classes, and imparting what a good work ethic can do for you.

Helga was our political soulmate. Helga's world view shaped by Nazi terrorism enlightened her and our considerations. Our friendship began via mutual friends and evolved after her retirement and Russian studies into restaurant (Asian food could not be spicy enough for Helga) or soup meals at our homes in the company of dogs. Helga even tutored us in German before our German Romantic Road trip. A piece of dark chocolate was her equivalent of an apple-a-day.
Helga we will miss your erudite conversation and kindness. Our condolences to your family. -Jordy and Jim Ventresca

I had Frau Muladore for German for in 75-78 at Northland and she was a wonderful teacher. She gave me a foundation that let me proficiency out of three quarters in college, a respect for the German language and culture, and fluency enough in technical German that I occasionally translated journal articles for others as a graduate student. She even put up with my occasional answering of her questions in French in my senior year, when German came right after French. I didn't always answer in the right language, and she just smiled and continued on. I very much enjoyed her class and lessons, and fondly remember her introducing us to gummy bears back in the day before when they were only imported from Germany. She will be missed and remembered fondly by those of us who were her students.

I had Frau Muladore for German class at Northland High School in the mid to late 70s. She was always one of my favorite teachers. I saw her about seven or eight years ago when I was out in the metro parks painting and she was out walking. She stopped and we talked a bit. It was really great seeing her. My Deepest sympathies to her family.

I took German from Frau Muladore at Northland during the 1975-1976 school year. Although I only stuck with it for the one year, I gained a solid foundation in German grammar from Frau Muladore, which made college German and subsequent studies very easy for me. She was a good teacher and I wish I'd had a chance to know her better.

Frau Muladore was my senior English teacher at NHS in 1988. She was a lady through and through and she taught me many things though I did truly appreciate them until later in life. I always admired Frau for the sufferings she endured in Germany. May she welcomed joyously in the arms of the Heavenly Father where she can finally rest in peace. My prayers are with her family.

She was such a lovely lady. I loved listening to her describe Germany. I visited Vienna and enjoyed talking with her afterwards. Truly an inspiring teacher and great example to follow. German student at Northland from 75 to 78. Thank you and God Bless. Karen (Spradlin) Strickland

Helga was our neighbor when we moved to Worthington. We loved bumping into her as she walked her dog to the park. She was always eager to learn about our lives, our children . . . and to talk politics. Her own life's experience made conversations fascinating. Our son interviewed Helga for a fourth grade life story project. He (and we) learned so much about WWll life in Germany. For us, Helga taught us how to age, how to stay engaged and curious. We will miss her. Our deepest condolences to Helga's family.

I remember her as a teacher at Northland HS. I was working for the school newspaper and was assigned to interview Mrs. Muladore. Being a typical teenager, I thought teachers were boring and didn't have much to say. She changed my mind. She told me about her childhood in Germany and showed me her forearm. She definitely made an impression on me and I have never forgotten her strength and spirit. So sorry for your loss!

Frau Muladore was my teacher and later my tutor, but she taught me so much more than German. Even though I haven't seen her for almost forty years, she is still often in my thoughts. Frau Muladore was one of the most important influences in my young life, and I cherish my memories of those years and all she gave to her students.

I had this lovely lady for German when she first came to NHS in 1968 or 1969. What a great person and teacher! My sister, Kathy, also had her and enjoyed her too. I ran into her years later at Bill Knapp's in Worthington and she remembered me!
