Herman Nack Obituary

NACK Herman Nack, 90, of Columbus and formerly of Upper Arlington passed away on Monday, October 25 at Westminster-Thurber Health Care Center. He was born in the Bronx, NY on April 22, 1920, the son of the late Morris and Bessie Nack, who emigrated from the Ukraine. Also preceding him in death were brother Albert, sister Adele and Dorothy "Dot" Taylor Nack, devoted wife for 33 years. Herm grew up in Coney Island, and graduated as an honor student in chemical engineering at Cooper Union, NY in 1941. He enjoyed his work, especially after coming to Battelle in 1954. He was a program manager of fluidized beds, worked on many research projects and collaborated on 30 patents. After retiring in 1985 he continued to consult on hazardous waste disposal. Herm liked problem solving and was a positive thinker, always striving to make the world a better place. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, First Community Church and was active in many other groups after retirement. His interests included family, travel, dancing, cooking, music, humor, bridge, reading, volunteering, socializing and, of course, the Buckeyes! He was a caring husband, father and uncle, always there to support and encourage his family. Herm is survived by his loving family, Mary Lou, his wife of 31 years; and children, Gary T. (Julia) Nack, Linda Lee Wilson and Carol Sue (Donald Skinn) Nack; three grandchildren, Brian (Lisa) Skinn, Tiffany T. Nack and Jeffrey Skinn; plus nieces, nephews; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many friends. A memorial service will be on Saturday, November 6, at 10 a.m. at Westminster-Thurber Retirement Center Chapel, 717 Neil Avenue, with a reception to follow. Private interment will take place later at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First Community Church Foundation, Central Ohio Parkinson's Society or Westminster Thurber Retirement Community, c/o Health Care Center. To Mary Lou and Herman's extended family - My wife Linda Curran) and I have really fond memories from working with Herman at Battelle Labs in the period of 1965 thru 1986. He was an eager, inventive and effective Chemical Engineer. Though saddened by his passing, we rejoice in his having such a long and fruitful life.
