Ira Burke Obituary

BURKE Ira James Burke. On Saturday, December 4, 2010, our father, Ira James Burke, went to eternal rest, that's when God told him he'd passed his final test. A good man he was til the end, a great son, brother, father, grandfather and friend ... we'll never meet another like him again. He cherished his children and did all that he could, to make sure we wanted for nothing and always did as we should. "Dad we're going to miss you each and everyday, but we'll do as you'd want us to and try to be okay. We Love You Dad" He was born in Selma, Alabama but moved to Columbus, Ohio at a very young age. Ira retired from the City of Columbus, Department of Parks and Recreation after a long and fulfilling career that spanned more than 40 years. While a city employee, he also worked for many years at the Neighborhood House. Prior to that he was a railroad worker. He loved spending time with his family and friends, sports, politics, hanging out at White Castle's kicking it with the other "old-timers", and checking out the view on Mt. Vernon Avenue. While at home, his favorite past-time was watching The Animal Planet. He was an excellent cook who, before becoming ill, was known among many for his skills in the kitchen. Ira loved life and felt God had blessed him to have a wonderful one. Ira was predeceased by his Mother and Father, James and Emily Burke, his two beloved sons, Jeffrey and Keith, his firstborn grandson Shannon and his sister Creola Wallace. He leaves to cherish his life, legacy and memories his sister, Elvira Haygood; daughter, Debra Burke; sons, Mike, Steve and Ty (Elisavet) Burke. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will always remember his gentle nature and kind spirit. His grandson Andre, will never forget how his "granddad" stepped in and stepped up to be a father, friend and mentor to him. Their relationship was full of unconditional love and the bond they shared will never be broken. He also leaves to remember him his dear friend, companion and care-giver, Sheila Cunningham, friend Mr. Ja'net Harris and ex mother-in-law and telephone partner, Clara (Mother) Smith. Funeral Service 12Noon Friday, December 10, 2010 at Greater Bethlehem Temple, 1725 E. Main St., where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the start of service. David E. Norman, Pastor. To Debbie, Stevie, Michael, Tyrone & the rest of the family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of "Uncle Son". Although I haven't seen him in a long time, I still remember the days when he used to drive the "Marvelous Markells" to some of their engagements and was one of our biggest supporters. Losing a parent is never easy, but eventually God will replace some of the tears with smiles of remembrance for all the he was to all of the family. Remember that he has Mother and Daddy and the rest of the Burke clan that has gone on waiting for him. Most of all, he has Jesus. He will be in good hands! You are in my heart and prayers. Love you much!
