James Dicke Obituary

Dicke James Frederick Dicke "Jim", age 94, died at home November 11, 2016 following a struggle with cardiac issues. A longtime New Bremen, Ohio resident, he was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. On January 14, 2015, Jim lost his wife, Eilleen, to her long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. During almost 73 years of marriage, theirs was a story of love and partnership. Jim was born January 30, 1922 in Ilion, New York to Carl Henry Dicke and Irene Kamman Dicke. He was raised in Dayton, Ohio, graduating from Stivers High School in 1939. Jim was the oldest of three children, and is survived in his family of origin by his sister, Mary Dicke Reed; and Mary's son and daughter. His sister Edna Dicke Vick preceded him in death, as did Edna's husband, son and daughter. Jim Dicke and Eilleen Webster Dicke married February 14, 1942. He was proud of his service during WWII as a Lieutenant Instructor in the Army Air Corps. The family was never far from their New Bremen, Ohio family roots; and, after his discharge from service in 1945, Jim and Eilleen moved to New Bremen with their infant son, Jim II. A son, Dane, would complete the family. Jim was an honorary graduate of Culver Military Academy, and was awarded an honorary DBA by Ohio Northern University. He considered them both his schools. In New Bremen, Jim worked with his father Carl, and other family members to found Crown Controls Company, which was initially a sales distributorship for home coal furnace controls. Today, the company has become Crown Equipment Corporation, a leading manufacturer of material handling equipment, currently in its fourth generation of leadership under his grandson, Jim Dicke III. At the time of his death, Jim was still serving as Crown's Chairman Emeritus. Jim was grateful for and humble about a number of honors and opportunities for service he experienced during his long life. He and Eilleen were generous people. Jim is survived by his sons, Jim II (Janet) and Dane (Cindy). Jim II and Janet have a son, Jim III (Katy); and a daughter, Jennifer (Andrew Prewitt); great grandchildren, through Jim II are Alexander Dicke, Charles Dicke, Connor Prewitt, Owen Prewitt and Kyle Prewitt. Dane and his former wife, Kerry have three daughters and a son, Anastasia (Jay Huelsman), Robin, Ashton, and Christopher. Great grandchildren through Dane are Allegra Huelsman and Liam Huelsman. Only Kerry preceded Jim and Eilleen in death. It should be stressed that Jim is also survived by a number of loving caregivers and friends who day after day, and year after year have been instrumental in providing Jim and his dear late Eilleen the caring support which was so important for all their good days. The family is overwhelmed with gratitude. A celebration of life honoring both Jim and Eileen's lives will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ Church in New Bremen, Ohio, with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery (For All Faiths) of New Bremen. The family will be receiving friends whom wish to pay their respects from 1-3 p.m. at the church. A memorial fund has been established at the New Bremen Foundation, P.O. Box 97, New Bremen, OH, 45869. Donations may also be made to the charity of the donor's choice. GILBERG-HARTWIG FUNERAL HOME of New Bremen, Ohio is caring for the arrangements. Condolences to the Dicke family may be left online at gilberghartwigfh.com

Please accept my mother and I's condolences for the loss of a wonderful, thoughtful man. There are 2 memories I wish to share with you. First is one that mom shared after we learned of his passing. My father had a long standing relationship that started with Jim Sr. needing something done to his car after hours one evening. He asked dad if he could take care of it and dad said "sure". That's the way dad was. Jim Sr made the choice then that this was the man he would entrust with ALL of his business! The second is the day dad retired from Crown (after selling the business to Crown), Jim Sr took the time to call from the Bahamas and wish dad a Happy Retirement! That made dad's day. Just a few moments in a long life, but shows the kind of man he was....people never forget those moments. We should all strive to leave such an impression! Chris and Lois Dicke

I remember meeting Mr. Dicke years ago in New Bremen during a business trip. He was so interested in where I was from and how I was doing. From that day on whenever I ran into him, he gave me a big smile. If he remembered me or not, it doesn't matter. He had warmth and grace and he will be missed. My sincerest sympathy to the family.

On behalf of myself and the entire Jack Eiting Family, we are deeply saddened by Jim's passing and wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the entire Dicke family. Jim's business acumen, his civic leadership, and the lasting impact of his generosity and philanthropy to the New Bremen community and the entire region will be felt by countless generations to come. Because of his vision and business leadership, he created thousands of family wage jobs that allowed so many the opportunity to provide a strong quality of life for their families. Most of all, we understand that his loss will be most sorely missed by his family who loved him dearly.

My sincere condolences to the Dicke family. I worked for Jim and Eileen at their house in New Bremen doing gardening and lawn care work several summers between high school years (in the late-1960's). They were both so kind and considerate...after all these years I still remember them fondly for that. What a great man to have built such a great company providing livelihoods for so many families.

My sincere sympathy to the entire Dicke Family. I will always treasured the time I spent with Jim and Eileen. Their personalities were different but both carried themselves with pride, professionalism and a keen interest in life. I especially enjoyed the challenging conversations I had with Jim concerning the Girl Scouts, our organizational goals and strategic planning. He challenged me to do some real critical thinking and be a better professional because of it. He helped me grow as a professional with these challenges and the legacy he was building with Crown. Your memories, both good and times of challenges will continue to carry your family forward. You are a modern American legend that our country desperately needs more of. A recent surgery prevents me from expressing my sympathy in person

After a busy day of work I was sitting with Jim and Eilleen, we were drinking a nice champagne. This was during the boom time on Wall St. several years before the financial crash. Jim turned philosophical and said "You know, I don't have much admiration for these financial types, they just move paper around. I'm pleased to run a company that actually makes a product. But what I really feel good about at the end of the day is knowing that we have 6000 employees(at that time) who provide for their families by working at Crown."
What a legacy, measuring your worth by the opportunities you provide for others.

I first met Jim fifty-six years ago when he hosted a memorable welcome visit of the sales and marketing department of Channel Master Corp. Crown Controls produced the TV antenna rotaters used by Channel Master through out their existence. Jim and his lovely wife Eilleen were truly memorable individuals. I recall how in his office he proudly displayed family photos including those of young Jim II and Dane. God bless you Jim and thanks for creating so many positive things in our world.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. & Mrs. Dickie at the Crown Miami branch several years ago. They were both very down to earth people and very humble. Mrs. Dickie actually selected the Florida circa art work that is located throughout our building and as she and her husband walked through the branch she commented on several of the pictures. They will both be dearly missed. What a legacy they have left behind.

My brother had worked at Crown in the late 60's early 70's when Jim Sr was in charge. Jim Sr was such a wonderful person and didn't know a stranger in Crown's workforce. My brother happened to have worn two different shoes to work one day and Jim Sr got word of it and came out into the plant and joked with my brother. You couldn't have asked for a better person to work for. Jim Sr had a real vision.... thank you!
