Janis Nash Obituary

Nash Janis Ann (Jones) Nash, age 91, of Beaverton, Oregon, previously of Gahanna Ohio, died at home Thursday, June 1, 2017, after a well-fought year long battle with acute myeloid leukemia. She was born October 4, 1925, in Logan, Ohio, to Lewis Gwenlyn Jones and Elsie Mae (Weaver) Jones. She graduated from Harding High School in Marion, Ohio, and received a Bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University. She began her career teaching at schools in Celina, Ohio, where she met her late husband, Clifton J. Nash, and taught at Jefferson Elementary in Gahanna, Ohio, until her retirement in 1991. She loved her students and maintained contact with many of them through Facebook, where she received updates on their careers, children and grandchildren. She is remembered by them for her caring and sharing her love of birding. Janis was a devoted mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by her brother, Lowell Jones of Bradbury, California; daughters, Kathryn Lee Catherwood of Eugene, Oregon and Sue Nash Gerhardt (James) of Beaverton, Oregon; sons, Kevin Clifton Nash (Colleen) of Bowie, Maryland, and Joel Lewis Nash (Susan "Beth") of Owasso, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Owen Catherwood, Gwen Catherwood, Eric Nash, Sarah Nash, Rachel Nash, Allen Nash, David Nash, and Morgan Nash; other relatives and many friends. Besides her parents, Janis was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Baker and step-mother Margaret Lucille (O'Brien) Jones. I'm sending my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Kathy and family in the loss of your mother. Mothers fill a special place in the heart and offer a special kind of love that no one else can give.

Mrs. Nash was my 2nd grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary during the 1969-70 school year. We also lived in the same Gahanna Heights neighborhood and I spent many days playing at the Tesnow's house across the street from her...one of my all time favorite teachers and simply a great lady. Condolences to her family.

My aunt was an inspiration to me throughout my 38 year teaching career. I loved her infectious laugh and have fond memories of playing board games with my cousins in the basement of her house in Gahanna. She was a terrific lady!

Thoughts and prayers to Jan's family. I only knew Jan a short while, 32 years ago while doing my student teaching at Jefferson. Although I didn't work with her, I remember having pleasant conversations, and her love of birding. God Bless.
