John De Libera Obituary

De LIBERA John S. De Libera, Esq, age 70, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family after a sudden and courageous battle with cancer. John was the son of the late Anthony and Angelina De Libera and was born June 23, 1939 in Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his loving maternal grandmother Albarosa Topazio, who raised him. His education included Hopedale High School, Class of 1957, in Hopedale, Ohio, The University of Maryland and The Ohio State University School of Law. He co-founded the law firm of De Libera, Lyons and Bibbo where he practiced for over 45 years, and was a Real Estate developer. John could not wait to get to his office in the morning. In 1994 he founded The Christopher Columbus Educational Foundation as a way to give back to the community. To date it has provided over one million dollars in scholarships to over 400 students. He also founded The League Against Child Abuse in the 1970's. For many years published Buon Giorno Magazine to honor his Italian heritage. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Rosemarie De Libera and by his three children, Sabrina Walters (Karl), Malissa De Libera Vergamini (Greg) and John Jason De Libera (Danielle). He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Cole Walters, Ava Walters, Giorgio De Libera, Gabriella De Libera and Valentina Vergamini. John, a member of St. Agatha Church, loved the library, McConnell Health Center and a good cup of cappuccino. Above all, he loved spending time with his family. He was a superb husband, father and grandfather and we are so grateful for him. We will carry his enormous love in our hearts forever. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 26, 2010 at 4 p.m. at St. Agatha's Church located at 1880 Northam Road in Upper Arlington. A celebration of John's life will be held immediately following the Mass in the Kennedy Parish Hall adjacent to the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to The Christopher Columbus Education Foundation Inc., 3363 Tremont Road, Suite 101, Columbus, Ohio 43221 so CCEF can carry on John's legacy of helping young people attain an education.

Dear Marie and family, I had the great fortune of knowing John for over 40 years. He was the college roommate and good friend of my (now deceased) step-father, Tony Q. I fondly remember John & Marie attending my high school graduation party in 1969 and my teaching John how to "Polka" in our family basement. He was a wonderful and kind person and will be sadly missed by all. My prayers are with you all.

To the De Libera family I want to express my deepest sympathy at the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. I knew John for just a few years and during that time I realized he was such a gentleman, with a smile and with kind words to all. We will miss him at the McConnell Center. Bea Quaranta

Dear De Libera Familiy,

I was so sad to hear about Mr. De Libera. I feel lucky to have known such a wonderful man. I treasure the memories of our St. Agatha days: Barbie play dates and the infamous RV road trips together as they always bring me a smile. The world has lost a special man. He will certainly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I did not formally know John even though i felt like i did! He was loved by my parents and sister- Tommy and Carla Piolata and Maria Milligan. He was so generous to help them out. I know that they loved meeting with him. He was talked about many times in our family dinners of what a great guy he was. Again I am so sorry. My prayers are with him and to all of you.

I will miss John's cheerful and upbeat greeting. One of the sayings I remember about him was his saying "As we get older we have to depend more on our Haberdasher", and how he loved the MCL. He will be missed greatly at the McConnell Heart Health Center.
