Marjorie Asbury Obituary

ASBURY Marjorie Asbury, age 90, passed away on July 7, 2008, after a stay at Riverside Methodist Hospital and Wesley Glen Health Care. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on February 11, 1918, the fifth child of Metta and Arthur Jones. She was preceded in death by her beloved son David Phillip Burt in 1966. Also preceded in death by former husbands Dr. Olan Burt, Edgar Babione and Lee Asbury. Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Susan Burt Fitzgerald and her husband, Michael, and Mary Jo Burt Shaffer and her husband, Steve. She will be lovingly missed by her grandchildren, Mollie Jean Fitzgerald, Michael Edward Fitzgerald and his wife Claire, David Andrew Shaffer, Scott Edward Shaffer and wife, Michele. Her later life was blessed with the addition of five great-grandchildren, Susan Abigail Larsen, Drew Edward Shaffer, David Rhodes Shaffer, Macy Marjorie Shaffer and Edie Veronica Shaffer. Marjorie graduated from Southeastern High School and attended Wilmington College and was teaching first grade at the age of 18 in Ross County. After moving to Columbus in 1940, she resided in Upper Arlington and raised her three children with loving care. She was offered the challenge to join Dr. John Dickhaut in the initial fundraising campaign for the Methodist Theological School. In 1958, Marjorie returned to teaching first grade with 38 students that first year in the Dublin School System. Throughout the next 50 years, the tapestry of her life and its design has predominantly reflected her love for and involvement with children. Always the consummate teacher, she considered the opportunity to teach a privilege and the testimonials from her students, peers and school administrators were her justifiable reward. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio which was the foundation of her faith. It is fitting that the service commemorating her life be held at this church with Reverend Phillip Brooks officiating on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 10 a.m.. The family will receive friends after 9 a.m. until time of service. Following the ceremony, this journey will then take her home to Concord Methodist Church in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she will be buried with her beloved son and her parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Concord United Methodist Church c/o Mike Putnam, Treasurer, 2410 Putnam Road, Clarksburg, Ohio 43115. She will be greatly missed by her family and her family of friends. Sign the online guestbook at www.dispatch.com/obituaries

I had Mrs. Babione as my first grade teacher at Dublin and she was one of my favorites. I did some calculating and she would have been about 53 years old at the time. My fondest memory was her "do better pills". She would give one or two m&m's if you did something helpful, and I'm sure other reasons, too. She lived a long life and touched so many during that time. God's blessings to you.

Mary Jo, Susan and family,

You have my deepest sympathies. My mother, Ernestine (Bibler) Dugan, was a friend of your mom's and spoke of her often. I also remember your mother well when she and Ed had The Circle Restaurant. She was so warm and loving - I can still remember her wonderful smile!! I think it was you, Mary Jo, that went with my mom and Ruth Morgan to California when you were a teen. My mom really loved that trip!! (My mom died Sept. 12, 2007). My love and prayers are with you....feel free to stay in touch. I may have pictures of your mom. With your blessings, I'm also sending a donation to Operation Smile in memory of your mother - combining her love for children and giving them a chance at having the beautiful smile that your mother always had!

My prayers have been for your family as you have prepared to say goodbye to this beautiful woman. From what I've read and from what I've heard about her, she leaves this world, knowing that she was loved. That we all would go knowing the same. You will be in my thoughts tomorrow, as you gather in memory of her long full life...and cherish the legacy of love she has left behind in each of you.

I didn't know Mrs. Asbury personally, but having read so much about her over the past few months, I feel like I have some inkling of what kind of woman she was. I am sure that the light that she emanated will continue to radiate through her family and the lives of those she touched. My deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Asbury's family and especially the Fitzgeralds. I pray that you can be comforted by knowing that she has truly gone home. God bless.
