To all of the DeVille Family,
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well-lived.
I was saddened to read Mrs. DeVille ("big Mary E") had died. However, at the same time I was immediately filled with warm and wonderful memories of being part of the amazing "Audrey Road family"! It is with a big smile that I remember those "good ole days" where several families with children close in age (Campbells, Carmans, DeVilles, Hensels, Mayers, McCulloughs, Millers, Norris, and Sternads) lived on the short block of Audrey Road. (I've been writing about these special relationships in a book, "Lessons For A Lifetime, Growing Up On Audrey Road".)
We became and stayed close friends for many years - some of us are still close friends as we celebrate our 60th birthdays! We were indeed blessed to have grown up during the 50s and 60s in such a loving neighborhood! Especially during a time of much social unrest and the VietNam War in which Frankie was killed.
My family lived three houses down from the DeVille's. My brother John and Frankie were good friends as were Mary E ("little") and I. I remember spending hours at the DeVille house and especially loved the suspenseful excitement of going into their attic "in search of the little green men", or going to St. James with Mary E with a lovely hankie hair-pinned on my head, to experience the blessed and peaceful quiet of "lighting a candle".
The door was always open to welcome friends at the DeVille home. I will always cherish that. Rest in peace Mrs. DeVille.

Grandma,
I loved the privilege to call you grandma, but you were so much more than that, you were a good friend.
I will never forget our very first meetings on Sunday afternoon's at your home on Audrey. I can still picture the trees full of leaves and your flowers in bloom. I can feel the warm sun on my face as you would always greet me with open arms and a smile to go with the sun. You knew me so well. After we got our hello's out of the way, your next question to me would be, "are you hungry?" Matter of fact, I can still smell your delicious home cooking and baking. You never let anyone go hungry, but you always left us to crave more.
You filled my life with love and opportunity. In your very home, I was able to raise my first born daughter. Much like you, she is an angel as well, a blessing from heaven. Thanks no doubt to your prayers for us. As a baby and toddler we would take her out on your street for walks and to play in your yard. She found her first earthworm in your backyard and when she picked it up, I'm not sure who wriggled more?
By the reception we got from all of your neighbors, we knew just how much you meant to them. Everyone loved to have Mrs. DeVille in the neighborhood.
I enjoyed all the shared memories of your childhood. How you loved to play at the local parks, swim at the pool and go off the high dive. You even liked going to the amusement park or fair when given the opportunity to ride the roller-coaster. I recall you even sharing with me how you loved to play in the snow and go sledding. Loving life as a child growing up in the depression is not something many of us could begin to comprehend. The lesson I heard you share was to enjoy who you are and what you have, give thanks to God for the life your given, and be proud to be an American. "I think eat your spinach fell in there somewhere too."
I loved how you would speak your mind. We had so many wonderful conversations together. Many times sharing some good laughs as well. I know by all our talks how much you loved all of your family and just how proud you were of them all. I share in that same love and so many of the other things you were so passionate about. I believe that is why we were so close.
Grandma, you have left me with so many memories that I will always cherish. A wonderful family and beautiful daugher to remember you by.
I love you,
