Mitchell Hackbarth Obituary

Hackbarth, Mitchell Alan

Our generous and loving God welcomed his faithful servant, Mitchell Alan Hackbarth, into his heavenly home on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the age of 59. Mitch spent the last week of his earthly life surrounded by his loving family, battling a newly diagnosed leukemia. He will be greatly missed by his family, many friends, and co-workers.

Mitch was born on June 13, 1954, in Hustisford, WI to Everett and Betty Ann Hackbarth. He excelled in academics and sports at Hustisford High School and graduated in 1972. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1976. Mitch started his career working as an auditor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. In 1979, he began his long career at ThedaCare. Mitch held many different positions at ThedaCare, eventually working his way up to

Vice President/Finance. Along the way, Mitch developed many lasting friendships with his co-workers.

In 1982, Mitch met his wife, Pat. They were married on November 16, 1985. Mitch and Pat are the proud parents of two children, Jennifer and Nick. These children were the focus of Mitch's life. Anyone who knew Mitch listened to countless stories about his kids and how proud he was of them. He was a great coach and mentor. Mitch was also a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and enjoyed serving God as an usher.

Mitch was a unique guy who had countless different circles of friends. Whether it was his "Husty" buddies, his "sports dads" at Appleton North, or his Serenity Bay friends, Mitch was the life of the party and always encouraged people to "celebrate his birthday" with him. Everyone who knew Mitch will most certainly miss his vibrant personality and fun-loving spirit.

Mitch is survived by his wife, Pat, and their children, Jennifer (fiancé Mitchell Torres) and Nick. He is also survived by his loving mother, Betty Ann Hackbarth, and his sister, Susan (George) Spang. Mitch will be greatly missed by his wife's family: Bill and Jean Errington, Kathy Errington, Barb and Bob Van Eperen, and their children Rachel and Nathan. His father, Everett, and his niece, Emily Van Eperen, preceded Mitch in death.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013, at Valley Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday morning at Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church (930 East Florida Avenue, Appleton) from 9-10:30 a.m. with the service following at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastor Mark Henke. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family encourages donations to any of the ThedaCare Foundations or Bethany Lutheran Church in Appleton.

Mitch's family would like to thank everyone at ThedaCare for all of their love and support during this time. Words cannot express how grateful we are for your kindness. We would especially like to thank Dr. Anthony Phillips, Dr. Philip Yazbak, and all of the ICU nurses at Theda Clark. In addition, the comfort brought to our family by Pastor Mark Henke and Rev. KC Schueler will never be forgotten.

Missing Mitch - attended the Rock River League baseball banquet this weekend and shared some memories of Mitch and our old softball tournaments on the ice out at the Lone Pine Tap on Lake Sinnissippi. We also had a wonderful sermon in church yesterday and I know we will see him again someday in heaven!

Miss you tons my friend, and I can only imagine the stories you are telling up there.......just make sure and put in a good word for me with the big guy.
Always a friend, Dan.

To the Hackbarth Family,

I met you today and wanted to let you know that Mitch was exactly correct, you all are very special people. I have know your husband/dad for about 15 years and each time I met with him over those years, he brought up all of you in the kindest of words. We spent most of our meetings at the Copperleaf Hotel drinking coffee and talking about Nick and Jennifer and the sports they were in and you could see it in Mitch's face how proud he was of both of you. I am a dad of 3 so I can't imagine how hard it must be for you to lose your father, but all I can tell you is to hold onto the great memories you had with him. Love to you and all of your family.

Hey best friend, that picture above says it all. That's you. You have no idea how many broken hearts you've left behind. We love you, we miss you and are still in shock. "Why" we say?" God's plan. Danny has your picture on both of his computer screens. I want it transferred to mine, that happy go lucky guy who could say one thing and have us laughing bent over in stitches. And then there was the proud father and husband and employee at Theda Clarke. Danny's Mom was so thrilled when you noticed her open her garage door and took a quick ride over to her house and then at another time you even gave her a tour. She really thought that you were the best! Who would take time out for that? You. That has been such a shock, can't imagine you leaving us. But it was God's plan and it isn't for us to ask why. You are the best, Mitch. We love and miss you with all of our hearts. There are no good-byes in my life, just see ya later and we will. From your circle of friends in "Husty." Daniel and Denise, XO buddy - a big hug and I'll include the kiss...

Pat and Family,
It was with great sadness when I heard about Mitch. He was a highly valued and trusted member of our leadership team at that point in Theda Clark history. Always up beat, a positive influence on others as well as a valued advisor, confidant and voice of truth about the numbers. He introduced me and our sons JP and Steven to fishing guide Mike Errington at Star Lake which resulted in many trips Up North while we lived in Neenah. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family at this time.

I met Mitch in the last 2 years. He has been instrumental in working on the building of the new Shawano hospital/campus. His leadership & direction have been so valuable. His influence on this project will last forever. I am grateful to have met him and worked with him. What a great loss to all of us. My heart breaks for your sadness. May the Lord's comfort for you be limitless during this difficult time.

Pat, Jennifer and Nick, Wow, what a shocker. As a fellow classmate of Mitch at Hustisford HS, we studied together, practiced and played sports together and had a lot of fun in many school activities. And every 5 years at our class reunions we shared stories of our past and of our families. Although I never met you, I could tell Mitch was very proud of his family. While he has moved on to his eternal resting place, we should celebrate his life and the wonderful memories we have of Mitch. I pray that you find peace and move forward with your lives, knowing that Mitch would expect you to have a good time with much laughter.

November 28, 2013

Mitch was a man I will never forget. I only knew him for about 2 years, but in those two years he made a huge impression on me. Always positive, always accepting of others. I will always give Mitch credit for helping us complete really important work that will have a lasting impact on ThedaCare and the work of our Foundations. More than his work, I will miss his love of life! Thank you, Hackbarth family, for remembering the ThedaCare Foundations as we remember Mitch. We will be sure to use the memorial gifts received to better the patient and family experience. One more thing...Mitch, philanthropy is not "free money" but I knew what you meant!

Pat, Jennifer, and Nick-
I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Mitch since my start at ThedaCare many years ago and considered him a mentor and close friend. I have kids the same age and we had many conversations on how proud he was about the accomplishments of both of his kids and would have that gleam in his eye when he was talking about you. He was a man filled with great kindness and enjoyed making work fun. I will forever miss him and please let me know if I can help you in any way.

I have worked closely with Mitch at ThedaCare over the past 7 years. He quietly served behind the scenes to help create and support the financial plan and business model that made Encircle Health a reality. For his help, I am grateful. In addition, he did so much to support all physicians--in both employed and independent practices to help make us successful.

Thanks to his family for sharing him with us--the extra hours and time, foresight and endless service will be remembered with fondness. I will miss his smile and sense of humor, dedication and mentorship.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Mitch's passing. I first met Mitch on the weekend he and the Oshkosh boys won the "6 Foot and Under" basketball tournament put on by the Oneida Tribe. This was April, 1988 or 1989. It was a big win, worthy of a beer or two to celebrate. Through the years since then, I have been lucky to cross paths with Mitch through our careers in healthcare. It was always clear that Mitch was a "stand up" guy, dedicated to his career at ThedaCare and devoted to his family. Whenever Mitch spoke of his family, he beamed with love, adoration, and pride. I will miss Mitch. I wish him a blessed eternal life. I wish peace to his family during this difficult time and always.

It is beyond belief that Mitch has left us. We are all sad and will remember the family functions that were so special. Funny how you never realize how special they are until someone is gone. He was a great golf partner at the cottage...always slicing his ball off the first tee. Never mind he would spend 15 minutes looking for the darn thing, but always seemed to find it.
