Phyllis Rapier Obituary

RAPIER Phyllis S. Rapier of Columbus, lost her courageous battle with cancer on September 2, 2010 at Kobacker House. She was born in Marion, Ohio in 1926 to Miller E. and Florence G. Sweney. She was raised in Marion and in Highland Park, Michigan. Her family moved to Columbus in the fall of 1944. Phyllis graduated from The Ohio State University where she met her first husband David A. Redman. In 1966, she married William A. Rapier and together they spent many wonderful years traveling the world, visiting five continents. Retiring in 1985, she spent her career in the Columbus Public Schools, teaching at Beaumont and Northtowne Elementary Schools. She has sailed off to join her parents and William, who have gone on before. She is survived by her son, Steven A. Redman, his wife Dona and their children Desiree and Steven of Westerville. Also cherishing her memory are step-daughters, Ninette Romosier of Columbus and Melanie Cunningham of Pickerington; special daughter, Gaye Rogowski-Haney of Richwood; cousin, Dick Wintermute of Columbus; and her many friends and neighbors. Honoring her wishes, there will be no viewing or formal service. Her cremains will be scattered among her favorite places at a later date. The family suggests any considerations be made to HomeReach Hospice or to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals burn units.

Steve, Dona, Dee-Dee and Stevie,
Phyl was such a wonderful neighbor and friend. Our adventures around Ohio and Michigan give me fond memories. So much of the Columbus area was introduced to me by Phyl--she knew all the great things to see and to visit. I miss her. She was so very proud of her family. I know you all honor her life, her graciousness, and her sense of humor. My deepest sympathy.

I'm smiling as I write this, because even though my sister and I didn't discuss this, I see that she has also left condolences for one of our favorite teachers of all time, Mrs. Rapier! While I don't remember all of my teachers, I could never forget her -- she was an absolute joy to have as a teacher and all of her students loved her. And that's saying a lot for 5th graders!! :) A great teacher and the epitome of patience and grace.

I so enjoyed knowing Phyllis. She was a wonderful hostess and delighted in showing off her beautiful Christmas trees during the holidays.

I have so many fond memories of my 5th grade teacher at Beaumont! And 30 years later, in 1997, we ran into each other at Oakland Nursery and had a lovely conversation...we remembered each other instantly. Wow, she certainly had her hands full with the 5th grade versions of Gloria, Amy, and I. Bless her, she cared enough to phone my parents when I wasn't my, um, best self.

Such a lovely woman.

Just wanted to send my sincere condolences to Mrs. Rapier's family. She was my 5th grade teacher at Beaumont Elementary. She was a great teacher and instilled fond memories in her students for many years to come. Even after I left the school, I stopped by there occasionally to see how she was doing. Sincere sympathy.
