Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I was incredibly saddened to hear of Randy's passing. I did have the pleasure of working with him from time to time. He was truly a kind, genuine, and inspirational man. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. I feel blessed to have known him. I pray he does find peace now, he has been so relentless in his search for his son. I was amazed by his generousity to others with missing children as well. There didn't seem like anything he wouldn't do for a friend in need. I wish we were blessed with many more souls like his on this earth!!!

I am truly saddened by the loss of this wonderful man. He had a great spirit and never gave up. What an inspiration to us all. I met Randy last fall at my son's soccer game in Dublin. We had a long conversation about his life, family, interests, hobbies and I shared mine as well. My first words to him when I met him was that my heart cries out to him for the tradegies in his life. I also shared with him things about my life. I have a son with special needs and remember saying to Randy with tears in my eyes to NEVER GIVE UP. He never did. What an inspiration he has been to all of us whose paths in life crossed with his. He will certainly be missed, but never forgotten. Thank you Randy for showing the world what true determination, passion, and love is all about. God bless his entire family.
With heartfelt sympathy,

I met Randy @ Mt Carmel he was doing work there for Mid-City and he always had a smile on his face even when he was hurting so much.He had lost the love of his life, he told me of how much he missed her and now he was missing his son Brian. He gave me a button and a bumper sticker to HELP find Brian. He NOW is with the love of his life and he NOW knows where Brian is. God Bless you Shaffer family. I am happy to have known Randy!

I first heard of Brian's disappearance through a Pearl Jam website- which prompted me to offer to put up missing person flyers, pass out buttons and have t-shirts made so Randy and I could pass them out. I got to meet Randy at the Cincinatti PJ show- at which I had given Randy all the shirts that I had made...well all but one and that one shirt was thrown to Mike McCready (guitarist for PJ).
I really enjoyed Randy's friendship- He was truly an amazing person. I will miss you Randy!
Please know that I will always look for Brian- I will still put up flyers, pass out buttons and t-shirts. Whatever it takes to bring him home!

I was blessed to have met Randy during his search for Brian. We developed a close friendship that included numerous late night talks and emails. He had a heart of gold and taught me so much during our friendship. I feel like there is a huge hole in my family now that Randy is gone but I realize that a celebration like none other occured this week in heaven. Randy was reunited with Renee, the love of his life and all the questions he had regarding Brian's disappearance has now been answered. He lived his life as a hero and was relentless in his search for his son.
Derek, Tim, Robin, Nancy and family - I pray that God wraps His arms around each of you and brings you the peace you each deserve.
Randy, Kaleb wants to make sure that you are going to watch over us, as I know you will. We gained an angel on Sunday. Rest in peace my friend.

Derek & The Entire Shaffer Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Randy. I worked with him here at Mid-City, whenever he stopped in the office, he would stop by my desk and say "hello" with a Smile on his face. I sure will miss seeing that Smiling face! I have helped when I could to help find Brian, and attended candle-lite vigils, and fundraisers; I know in my heart he is happy again being reunited with Renee & Brian. He will missed by many! Derek, I feel so much sorrow for you, I pray God gives you the strength to make it through the hard times. Please let me know anything I can do to help continue the search for Brian.

We knew Randy though my parents. My Dad and Randy worked at Mid City Electric together and were such good friends. We were deeply saddened to hear that Randy passed away, and had to ask ourselves "Why?" After all this family has been through, it is hard to imagine why bad things happen to good people. The only comfort here is that God knows when our time is up, and calls you home when you least expect it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Shaffer family, and we hope you feel all of the love and prayers that have gone out to you. May God Bless you and be with you at this most difficult time, and may He comfort you with all of the good memories you have.

The first time I met Randy, a ladder was on the floor and his legs were hanging out of the ceiling in my office. He came down smiling and said' "Hi". I thought I heard someone calling him Gus, so when I passed him in the hall the next time I saw him I called out, "Hi, Gus. How's it going?" He looked around and smiled and said, "I'm Randy, who's Gus?" We laughed together and he was my friend from that point on. I have missed seeing him on a regular basis since he was assigned to other areas to work but my thoughts and prayers have continued for him as they will for you, his family. Weren't we all made richer for having him share time with us? May God comfort your hearts and minds in the days ahead!

FROM A SUPPORTER OF MR. SHAFFER
September 18, 2008
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, ""I welcome you.""
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......""My day was not in vain.""
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My family and I are deeply saddened by the news of Randy's sudden death. Our deepest condolances to Randy's family. He is certainly in heaven with his beloved Rene and he finally now knows where their dear Brian is. If Brian is still with us here on earth, he now has two loving parents to watch over him and his brother Derrick.
I have known Randy since elementary school. He has always been the kindest person. We have just recently been in contact again writing emails to eachother. I was always so impressed with his deep committment to find Brian and his love for Rene. He missed her so much. I envision such a beautiful reunion in heaven! I am forever thankful for Randy's advice regarding what to tell our son as he recently left our home for college. He told me that he never wanted to see another parent go through what he has gone through. I am going to miss him so much.Thank you Randy, for your friendship, rest in peace dear friend.

Sunday, September, 14th,2008, was a 'Freakish' kind of day in Central Ohio...We realized we can't predict our weather..nor we can't predict our lives..
Mr. Shaffer lived life..to-the-moment!..those he left behind will forever remember the memories that he gave to us all.
He was a true American, working for a living, helping his neighbor, and doing what he can to help other people who are in he same situaion.

I would like to say that I happened to meet Randy one day in an elevator and he was wearing a badge in search of his son Brian. At the time I originally spoke to him, I didn't realize that he was Brian's father and I went on how tragic that was and how my heart went out to the family and that they must keep hope alive that he is out there. In the next moment, he told me he was Brian's dad and was so grateful for people who remember him and still hope and pray with him. I talked with him for awhile after that and he was the nicest most soft spoken gentleman. I was so incredibly saddened when I heard the news. It breaks my heart so for those of you who knew him personally, my heart goes out to you for the loss of a very special person, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely,

Your family has always been kind to my family and I, from the travel baseball days to the present. Renee was my dad's nurse when he had heart problems, and I'll always be thankful for how she treated him. Randy had a beer at our house about a month ago, he smiled the whole time and spoke the most loving words about Derek, Brian, and Renee. I heard a quote one time and it makes sense here: "When you come into this world, everybody smiles while you're crying. When you leave this world, everybody cries while you're smiling".....my thoughts are with everybody, and I'm sure Randy is smiling.

Randy was an inspiration to countless people. His faith in God shined through his relentless dedication in the search for Brian as well as his ability to continue living and touching lives every day through his work and music. We will certainly miss him! Our thoughts and prayers are with all family and friends.

We are deeply sadden with the passing of Randy. He was a great friend. I worked with Randy for 12 years at Mt. Carmel Hospital and will always remember our great conversations. He and Renee were great friends of ours. During my extended illness they were always at the hospital or at our home. Renee was such a great inspiration during my illness. Randy would ride his bike to our home about once a week and visit and talk for hours. We hope he is at peace and our thoughts and prays are with the family and especially Derrick. We loved Randy dearly and he and Renee will always hold a special place in our hears. May the love of family and friends carry you through this grief.

My beautiful friend Randy, I told you once in a letter that you were a champion, a leader and to those who needed you a hero. Your trials were many and one day God would take it all away from you and give you peace. Sunday God decided to bring you home. Although I cry and mourn your loss here on this earth, I rejoyce in the knowledge that yoru work was fulfilled here and your suffering is over. Know you have something none of us can ever understand, peace, praise and a joy. your music will not end, for your now singing and rejoycing God. You did well with this life God gave you here, but the wonders you will do now I am eager to fathom. I only wish that we can all follow your lead and be the type of man you where here. We rejoyce Randy knowing he is with his family, Who else but Randy would we to help prepare a house for us in God's Kingdom. I miss you my angel friend, I loved you and will always love you. I am grateful you allowed me to be you friend, I am honored you called me Friend....Wings to you my champion friend
