Richard Smiley Obituary

Smiley Lieutenant Commander Richard Alan Smiley, United States Navy-Retired is resting in the light of Christ's peace after a valiant battle with cancer. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace and comfort throughout his life. Rick was born to Glen Arthur Smiley and the late Dolores "Dee" Ann Bowman in Springfield, Oregon, on April 28, 1958. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 and entered into the submarine service. He was proud to have served onboard seven Naval submarines: the USS Roosevelt, USS Ethan Allen, USS Patrick Henry, USS Aspro, USS Michigan, USS Daniel Boon, and USS Maryland. One of his favorite duty stations was Navy Special Warfare Group 1, where he functioned as the Supply Officer for Navy SEAL Teams 1, 3, 5, and 7. His adventurous career also took him to Keflavik, Iceland where he met his future wife and fellow Naval Officer, Dr. Megann Plummer. He retired from active duty with 26 years of service and moved to Columbus, Ohio, to become the proprietor of a bed and breakfast, The Greenleaf House, located in historic Olde Towne East. Rick was a squared-away sailor, a true patriot, a skilled storyteller, a weekend motorcycle enthusiast, a whiz in the kitchen, not a shabby golfer, and the most interesting man in the world. He also proved himself to be the most patient and loving of fathers, choosing to be the stay-at-home-dad to his two young sons, William and Soren. Among his many, many blessings was his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Megann; his sons, William and Soren; adult children, Christopher and Tiffany; father, Glen Smiley; brothers, Rod (Shannon) Smiley and Randy Smiley; stepsister, Theresa Redden; nephew, Sean (Heather) Smiley; mother and father-in-law, Judy and Rudy Plummer; and brother-in-law, Edward (Morgan) Plummer. He is preceded in death by his mother Dee Bowman and his grandparents, to whom he was especially close, Doris Carper and Ann and Harold Smiley. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is now at peace and with his Heavenly Father. Friends may call on Monday, August 31, 2015, between the hours of 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at MAEDER-QUINT TIBERI FUNERAL HOME, located at 1068 S. High St., Columbus, Ohio, 43206. Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 1st, 4 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in German Village. The service will be officiated by Father Kevin Lutz. Prayers, condolences, and memories, which may be shared at www.maederquinttiberi.com, are gift enough for the Smiley family.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire family Megann. I just heard yesterday that not only had Rick been ill, but had died a couple days ago. Megann, neither of you know me, but you will know who I am. Over all of the years you have lived in your house, I have watched you drive thru the parking lot just to the west of your house, in your truck, little melon-colored t-bird & Rick on his motorcycle, as I am the security for Tifereth Israel (for 33 yrs next month). I have never met you, but I will keep all of you in my thoughts & prayers through this very difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss.

Rick was a very special man and touched the lives of all who knew him, he was a one of a kind sweet soul. I met him when his dear son William was in my Preschool class and I enjoyed seeing him and talking to him every morning he always had a great story to share with me. He had a great sense of humor and we had many morning laughs and great talks about his son William. He loved his sons with all that he had and was proud to be a Stay at home father to them! He was amazing and such a great role model for everyone. He will be missed but never forgotten.
