Sally Stern Obituary

Stern Sally Stern, age 95, passed away on March 1, 2013. She was born on the Lower East side of NYC on May 11, 1917. Her parents, Max and Pauline Weintraub, were emigrants from Russia. They came over on a ship and passed thru Ellis Island. When they came to America they had no money and had to start from scratch. Eventually her dad was able to open a candy store in Brooklyn NY where she worked every day after school. Sally met her husband, Aaron at the age of 15 while working in her dad's store. She graduated from James Madison High School in 1934 and was married to Aaron in 1938. Sally had four sisters and one brother. One sister died as a child from Rheumatic Fever and her only brother also died at a young age from an infection. She survived her three remaining siblings, Ruth, Ina and Henny who were all very close over the years. She started her marriage and family in Brooklyn, NY giving birth to two daughters and one son. They all lived in a one bedroom apartment for many years. In 1951, they moved to a lovely house in Queens that was built by her husband who was a building contractor. Here she raised her family with love and wisdom. She became very active at the Hollis Hills Synagogue, where she was the youth social director for many years. Once here children were grown, she became an office manager for a very busy Medical practice. Sally retired with her husband to Hollywood Florida where she lived for over 20 years. Sally's husband passed away in 1998 and in 2002 she decided she wanted to be near her family so she moved to Dublin, Ohio close to where her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren lived. She loved living at the Dublin Retirement Village and was always quick to say that it was the best move she ever made. Sally had her 95th birthday last May and all of her relatives came from far and wide to be with her. She said many times that she lived a wonderful life and that she was a very lucky lady. She is survived by her daughters, Leah and Jace; and her son, Norman; her daughter-in-law, Jo; and son-in-laws, Ken and David; her grandchildren, Marc, Brian, Karen and Sam; and her great-grandchildren, Nara, Jacob, Andrew, Nathan and Kaitlyn. She will be missed. Her funeral will be at the Beth David Funeral Home in Hollywood, Florida on March 5, 2013 at 2 p.m. There will also be a service at the home of Norman and Jo Stern in Delaware, Ohio on Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sally's name to either the Jewish National Fund or the US Holocaust Museum.

Sally, you were a great spirit and force; while I only knew you in the last weeks of living here, you left too soon and will be missed by many at DRV, Leah and David, and many more family and friends.
