Virginia Pickering Obituary

PICKERING Virginia Leigh Pickering, age 80, of Lancaster, died Monday, August 4, 2008, at the Pickering House. She was a graduate of The Ohio State University. She was also an champion golfer whose generosity shall impact the lives of our community for years to come. She was a well-known benefactress for many Lancaster and Fairfield County organizations. She had made extraordinary contributions to the betterment of health care in Lancaster through her gifts for the Pickering House, a free standing Hospice facility, in memory of her parents, Dan and Grace Pickering, as an ongoing supporter of Fairfield Medical Center, and a former board member of the Fairfield County Health Foundation. She also facilitated the massive facelift of the women's locker room at the Robert K. Fox Family Y. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society. She is survived by nieces, Annette L. McCormick of Lucas, OH, Peg Bowen of Sarasota, FL; nephews, Bruce Andre of Liberty Lake, WA, Lawrence Leigh Andre of Delray Beach, FL and Dan L. Pickering Jr. of Beuford, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents Dan Leslie and Grace, brother Dan Leigh, sisters Nanciann McCormick and Betty J. Andres. Service will be held Saturday 1 p.m. in the Chapel of FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Lancaster, OH with the The Rev. Bill Pursley officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Rose Cemetery. Friends may call Friday 2-6 p.m. at the funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Pickering House of FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Rd., or the Fairfield County Foundation, PO Box 159, Lancaster Festival, P O Box 1452, or the Fairfield Area Humane Society, 1791 Granville Pike, all of Lancaster, OH 43130.
