Warren Tyler Obituary

Tyler, Warren
1944 - 2018
Warren William Tyler was born on September 6, 1944. I can never really imagine him as a baby. It always felt like he just – appeared – out of thin air. He was authentic and consistent. He never wasted words and always helped a friend. He enjoyed good music and wine, he respected skill and loved dinner parties. He connected strangers and created community over linguine with clam sauce, or osso buco, or any other kind of delicious thing. He was complicatedly simple. Details mattered. He appreciated intellect and always advised to never confuse honesty with candor. He was the everything drawer. He was the one you went to first because you knew he would have exactly what you were looking for. A tip. Advice. A connection. Recommendation for a good bottle of wine. How to find a spice. Where to buy a house or a great piece of art. "Warren'll know." The everything drawer. Whether we liked it or not, we were all students in the world of Warren Tyler. We sat upright and at attention and we always, always learned. My father spoke fluently in code. He said things – uniquely. But, like any classroom – if you stuck around and listened well, you'd become a codebreaker. And if you really paid attention, you would be able to predict when the knowledge drop was about to occur. After dinner. With a toothpick dangling from the corner of his mouth. When he would raise his eyebrows, take a sharp inhale, and say, "Well...." Those were his tells. He had others. But those were the best ones. And when the night was through – we would all leave with a new knowledge or perspective that we never even knew we needed. My dad taught me all types of things: The value of a firm handshake; what fork to use when; how hard he could punch; never slam a door; never be tortured by self-doubt; always write a thank you note; in a meeting, never look at the person talking, watch everyone else; try it before you say it's gross; there is always enough money for a book; always be proud of who you are; do your best – always; never miss a chance to say nothing; something about drop-kicking a monkey (still lost on that one). My dad would spend time with himself. In a quiet room. Sitting in a chair.
"Dad, what are you doing?" "Thinkin." "About what?""Stuff." Like I said – he never wasted words. I'm going to miss my dad. I miss him now. But, what I know is that we all have a piece of his wisdom with us – inside. And the more we are together, the more of him we will have with us. So, be sure to be together. To tell stories and to share lessons with others. Wisdom is powerless if we keep it to ourselves. Thanks for being such a wonderful teacher, dad. Class dismissed. Warren was loved by many people, including his wife Marty Anderson; children, Dawn Tyler Lee (Robert E. Lee, III) and Kevin Tyler (Greg Jernigan); brothers, Carman and Frank (deceased); nephews, Eric and Marc; and many other family members and friends. Memorial Celebration 7 p.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018, at Copious - McGowan Loft (2nd floor), 520 S. High St., Columbus, where family receive friends 4 - 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to The Columbus and Franklin County Affordable Housing Trust (http://hztrust.org/), or the Columbus Medical Association Foundation (http://cmafohio.org/home). We celebrated Warren's life in grand style at Copious, 520 South High Street in Downtown Columbus, Ohio, Thursday, February 22, 2018. Way too many friends were there; David Barker, Michael Coleman, Mary Jo Green Hammond, Mark and Cynthia Feinknoph, Larry James, Jim Carpenter, Brent DeVore, Sid Druen, Jim Ginter, Dan Heinlein, Rich Simpson, Bob Wandel, hundreds of other friends and family whose names elude me right now.

The family was represented by wife Marty Anderson, children Dawn Tyler Lee, Robert Lee, Kevin Tyler, Greg Jernigan, his brother Carman, nephews Eric and Marc. The ceremonies were welcomed by Angela Pace, who introduced musician Sabrina Tutstone, speakers David Barker, former Columbus mayor Mike Coleman, Susan Arkle, Maggie and Ian Graham.

The speaker that made the most impression was Warren's Chaney State College roommate Bruce Gordon, who remembered that he would get a called from WT whenever it was time to move. When he was told that WT was moving to Columbus. Bruce stated that he was upset that WT was leaving Philadelphia and he asked, What is in Columbus?

But Bruce soon discovered that WT was leaving Philly for a wonderful job at State Savings Bank and Marty Anderson in Columbus. That was a good thing.

It is with fondness that I recall the goodness of Warren Tyler who helped me find an apartment when I first moved to Columbus. Later, I came to know him in his role as civic leader through his support of the National Black Programming Consortium and our efforts to bring quality Black media to the city. Remembering Warren is to remember his pleasant demeanor and debonaire pressence. He was a great role model of success and community partnering.

My sincere condolences to the Tyler family. For anyone who has been in/around the Columbus any length of time you were acquainted with Mr. Tyler. I had the great honor of interacting with him often during my Columbus Chamber of Commerce career in the 1980s and then again at Nationwide. I will always remember him as a great listener who while in conversations always made others feel like they were the only other person in the room and that what they were saying truly mattered. Truly the definition of a Renaissance man whose style and grace will be missed.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to Warren's family and friends. When I heard of Warren's passing it was a shock to my system. No one could prepare me to lose such a long time and close friend! We learned about life together. We raised our families alongside each other. We grew older together. I will never forget the times we spent just hanging out together. I will miss you deeply my friend. You will always be with me. Always.

My condolences to Marty,Dawn, Kevin and family. As so eloquently written in your tribute Dawn: What a teacher! What a generosity of spirit and knowledge. I had the honor of knowing him as a staff member at Commerce. And at those wonderful dinners. Love to family.

When Warren became Director of Commerce we employees didn't have to guess what he wanted. He quickly made it clear -- excellence was expected. His goal for the department was to "do a few things and do them well" and we weren't going to waste time or money in getting there. Although he could be tough as a drill sergeant, he was also considerate and funny. He was classy but also down-to-earth. It was a privilege and enriching experience to work with Warren. My condolences to his family.

I met WT in 1982 when I was working for the Columbus Call-Post. I had heard about a black man who was a working for State Savings Bank so I arranged an interview with him.

I went to his office, I believe Dawn was in the fifth grade and visiting him that day. I inteviewed and photographed him and the story came out the next week.

A few months later, I picked up a copy of the Columbus Citizen-Journal and the photograph that I shot during the interview appeared on the front page. WT was announced as Governor Richard Celeste's director of Commerce. Later he became the head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Just my luck.

Best boss for me while he was at Ohio EPA. I learned so much from Warren. Later I learned that others that I considered good managers held Warren in high regard as our instructor. Whoever wrote his obituary captured the essence of the man. Yes, he was a good teacher and a wise man.

WT will be missed! An old childhood friend from Chester,Pa. He was also my room mate at Cheyney University. Warren put up a tough fight;he enjoyed life. I would like to express my sincere sympathies for your loss and to share a Warren Story:

Warren was such a nice, gentle and kind person! He made an unusual day in my life easier by me experiencing the "Warren Touch"; in that we were both pallbearers for my dear friend, Sheila Feinknopf's funeral (90's) and being a pint-size lady and in a new experience ( never before or since been a pallbearer), I was apprehensive, but once I saw Mayor Greg LaShutka and Warren as pallbearers too, I knew I could do it!(knew them only by reputation)
After Sheila's service, when we were lined up to do our duties, Warren took a long look at me ( I was dressed in a purple and gold Kufi, a purple suit with pearls, a small black body purse and high heels) and nodded at me as if to say "I was dressed appropriately and fit the part" ( a confidence booster vs. insult). He and Towering Greg had Linda Kurtz and me placed in the middle so that we would not have much weight and they quietly coached us on how to walk carefully and Warren even told me to watch my heels at the gravesite! I thanked him profusely for all of his help in making my experience bearable. It turned out to be a good day and memorable experience.
May He rest in peace! Helen Cain Jackson, Grateful Ms. Pallbearer!

Dearest Warren, Who will we go to now without our go-to friend? We are lost. Sending a candle for you to light our way. As our world just became dimmer.

WT,

My birthday brother. a man of the world. Could you turn a fork? A chicken was turned into a delicacy, birthday lobster was a meal never to forget.

I met wonderful people with you. I learned how to do for others before doing for self. Rest easy my mentor.

My wife and I wish to share our sincere condolences to Warren's wife and family. I worked with many people during my lengthy career. Warren is at the very top of my list for consistent professionalism. I learned a great deal from him. He will be missed by the many people he assisted in the Columbus community.
