William Newnham Obituary

Newnham William F. Newnham, MAJ, USAF RET. On January 13, 2017, Bill (age 82) flew his final mission into the Wild Blue Yonder. He was preceded in death by his son William Michael (Billy). He leaves behind to treasure his memories his wife of 60 years, Carol; his daughter, Nicki; and his three granddaughters, Brandi, Taylor, and Brooke. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Newnham; and sister, Patti Griffin. He was born October 9, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio. Bill graduated from BGSU and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the USAF where he spent 20 years, retiring as a Major. He flew many aircraft during his tours of duty including the B47, KC135, F-100, F-104, and the O-1 Birddog. While serving as a forward air controller in Vietnam, he earned 15 Air Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He received his Master's Degree in Education in California and after retiring from the AF, he taught Industrial Arts at Hamilton Township. Here, he devised a curriculum around students building a LongEZ aircraft that is now on display at the Fairfield County Airport. He loved teaching and was a mentor to many of his students. After retiring he and his wife spent many wonderful years traveling, often with his granddaughters. Bill was a 5 time cancer survivor. At age 54, he developed large cell lymphoma caused by Agent Orange, but overcame this hurdle and enjoyed many more fulfilling years. Farewell, Bill, and may we see you again "Somewhere in Time". His family would like to thank the staff at the James Cancer Hospital for the care and treatments he received there. At his request there will be no services. Instead, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Contributions in his honor may be made to Cancer Research or the Zusman Hospice. In September, I went on a Flag City Honor Flight with 80 other veterans to Washington D.C. to view the veteran memorials there. I was partnered with a Vietnam War combat veteran who saw the names of some of his friends who were killed on the Vietnam Wall which stands as a tribute to veterans like Bill who endured adversity from service to their country.

Bill was my cousin who was 15 years older than me and the oldest member of our generation of Newnhams. Growing up, I admired his service to our country as an air force officer. It was also admirable that he was able to excel in a second career in teaching after his retirement from the air force. Carol and his family are in the thoughts of my family in this time of their loss.

Mr. Newnham, thanks for the inspiration. Know that I could NEVER pay you back for the lessons I learned, but I have done everything I could to pay those lessons forward. BSBD... Fly on my friend, my mentor.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Newnham family. Was lucky enough to be a part of Mr. Newnhams aviation class building the LongEZ for three years and I cherish those times daily. Many dedicate to teaching, but few touch the lives of their students for a lifetime like Mr. Newnham. May he rest in peace.
