CDR Forrest Hester (Buzz) Wood (USN Ret.) under the care of Kindred Hospice at Wesley Place in Dothan, AL, left this world to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 26, 2018. He was surrounded by his family. He was born February 10, 1933 in Houston, TX to the late Forrest Hubert and Grace Jane Hester Wood. His younger brother, Jerry, also preceded him in death. CDR Wood began his military career in the US Navy as an enlisted man in August 1951 after graduating from Reagan High School. After his duty assignment in San Diego, he was sent to Pensacola, FL and trained to become a Naval Aviator. He flew during the end of the Korean War as well as during the Vietnam War. CDR Wood retired from the US Navy in August 1976 and moved to Dothan, AL to begin a second career as an instructor at Troy University, where he taught whatever courses were needed. Later he became an Associate Professor of computer sciences, and then became head of the CIS Department from which he retired in 2007 after 32 years. He was a devout member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church since 1971. For many years, he loved teaching various Sunday school classes, singing in the choir and the quartet, and serving the Lord wherever he could find. Survivors include his loving wife, Eulene Wood; his children, Grace Elaine (Scott) Covington, and James Evan (Rachel) Wood; grandchildren, Cortney (Jordan) Miller, Jake Hayes, Owen Wood, and Mills Wood; great-grandson, Jacob Hayes; step-children, Earl (Shelly) Steely, Sharon (Dale) Tidwell, and Melanie (Barry) Hicks; step-grandchildren, Brandon Steely, Sean Steely, Rebecca Tidwell, and DJ Hicks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
