James Lowe Peacock Jr.

James Lowe Peacock Jr., "Jim", a resident of Dothan and Tifton, Ga., died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. today, Nov. 4, in the Tifton First United Methodist Church with funeral services to follow in the chapel at 11 a.m. and burial at Oakridge Cemetery with Bowen-Donaldson Funeral Home in charge. The Revs. Jerry Lillard and Wayne Helms will officiate.

Mr. Peacock was born Nov. 9, 1912, in Muscogee County, Ga., and spent the early years in Columbus. A graduate of Columbus High School and Auburn University, he received an electrical engineering degree in 1934 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was married to Sara Claire Rogers of Speigner on Feb. 29, 1936, and was employed by Georgia Power Co. in Columbus, transferring to Tifton in 1937. In 1941, he was called to active duty in the Army and served in the U.S. and Europe throughout World War II. He was wounded in the D-Day invasion and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Bronze Arrow. After the war he remained in the Army Reserve and retired as a Major. He was a member of the Military Officers Association and American Legion. In 1946, Mr. Peacock established the Atwater-Peacock Electric Co. in Tifton along with Mr. Hull Atwater, and became sole owner in 1972. He was a member of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers and a registered professional engineer. He was an active member of the Tifton First United Methodist Church, member and teacher of the Nath Williams Sunday school class, served terms as Sunday school superintendent and on the Administrative Board, as well as two terms as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. A member of the Lions Club since 1946, he served as president in 1956 and was active until recent years. He was also a member of the Spring Hill Country Club, Tifton Investment Club, Tifton Fishing Club and Tifton Arts Council.

Mr. Peacock was predeceased by his parents, James Lowe Peacock and Minerva Gordy Peacock; and a sister, Mary Peacock Speight, all of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Claire Rogers Peacock of Dothan and Tifton; his children, Dr. James Lowe Peacock III, and Florence Peacock of Chapel Hill, N.C., Claire Peacock Helms and the Rev. Wayne Helms of Dothan, Laurie Peacock Jordan and Zack W. Jordan of Apopka, Fla.; grandchildren, Dr. Louly Peacock Konz and Dr. Jeff Konz, Dr. Claire Peacock Raymond and Dr. Mark Raymond, Natalie Peacock Corral and Emiliano Corral, Catherine Helms Casey and James Casey, John Robert Helms and Rachel Cole Helms, Marguerite Lowe Jordan, Sara Caroline Jordan and Rebecca Lauren Jordan; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Clayton Konz and Flora Rochelle Konz, Yannis Mark Raymond, Michael Ander Connell, Christopher Jair Connell, Zach Casey and Von Casey and Annabelle Pearl Helms. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Peacock Madding of Albany, Ga., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be grandchildren and nephews, Steve Rogers, Scott Madding, Robert Jolly, Jonathan McAllister, John Robert Helms, Jeff Konz, Mark Raymond, Emiliano Corral and James Casey. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Tifton Lions Club, the Tifton Investment Club and former employees of Atwater-Peacock Electric Co.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care of Mr. Peacock by the Dothan Southern Clinic staff, the Terrace at Grove Park and Wiregrass Hospice.
