Larry Shurtliff Obituary

Larry R. Shurtliff

Enterprise

Larry Richard Shurtliff, age 73, died June 6, 2016 in the St. George Spring Gardens Memory Care Center from Alzheimers disease. He was born on June 28, 1942 in Overton, Nevada to Carl Luman Shurtliff and Lydia Ellen Roesberry. He married Leona Brooks in the St. George Temple on September 8, 1962.

He was raised in Overton, Nevada where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, and track. He was Moapa Valley's Student Body President when he was a senior in High School. He attended Dixie College on an athletic scholarship where he met his wife. They married just out of Junior College and both went on to Utah State University where they both graduated with Bachelor degrees. His first coaching job was at West Side High School in Dayton Idaho. He finished his Master's degree at Utah State in 3 summers. His coaching took him to Lincoln County High School in Panaca , Nevada, Lehi High School, (where he worked on his Doctorate at BYU) and Spanish Fork High School. He got out of coaching for about 8 years when he first moved to Enterprise , Utah, but the coaching was too much in his blood, and he started coaching again when his 3 older boys were in High School.

He coached at Enterprise High School for 8 years and in the process won three consecutive Basketball Championships. He moved from there to SUU in Cedar City, and coached the Women's basketball. He had two of his daughters play for him there, and won two American West Championships in a row.

He later also coached at Snow College, Women's Basketball, where his daughter helped him coach. From there he served a senior mission with his wife in Independence, MO., and later a 6 month mission at Cove Fort in Utah. The last 9 years he has helped Larry B (his son) coach boys basketball at Enterprise High School, and they loved him as he loved them.

He served as a Bishop in the Enterprise 2nd Ward, and as a High Counselor and Stake Young Men's President. Of all his callings in the church, his favorite was the 16-17 year old Sunday School Class. He loved Hunting and Fishing AND going to Alaska too.

He is survived by his wife, ALL of his children and their spouses. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 siblings, David, Rose and Norma, and also two sweet grandchildren Shilo and Abby.

Funeral Services will be held June 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Enterprise, Utah Stake Center at 88 South Center. Visitation will be on Friday, June 10 at the Enterprise Stake Center from 6 - 8 PM and prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:45. Larry was my PE teacher at Lehi High School. I typed his name on my iPhone and was saddened to see he had passed away 4 years ago.
He was a very fair man and I owe him a lot. He took me under his arm once when he could of just as easily make pay some consequence. It was an act of kindness I will never forget.
He is a good man.

Everyone will miss Coach Shurtliff. What a great example he was to everyone, not only the students and players he coached but to fellow coaches, like me, and others who worked with him. He did it HIS way, but I can assure everyone it was the right way. No need to worry about anything illegal or immoral in his coaching and teaching, nor in his everyday demeanor. Wish we had more Coach Larry R Shurtliffs! Goodbye our friend and our most sincere condolences to Leona and the Shurtliff family. We have grown to love you. Our best, Evan and Nicki Excell

Godspeed Coach Shurtliff. I still can't call you Larry. It has been fourty or so years since we spoke face to-face. I can close my eyes and feel it as if it were yesterday...that you looked me in the eyes and passionately gave me grid-iron marching orders and conveyed your belief in me, a belief, that I could successfully execute your next plan.

The echos of your voice in my heart still ring out . "You can do it" "Go get 'em" A gift I cannot repay. I am deeply grateful, Coach. Se ya later.

Dear Larry,

When God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
He put his arms around you
And whispered, "Come to me."
He didn't like what you went through
And he gave you rest
His garden must be beautiful
He only takes the best
And when we saw you sleeping
So peaceful and free from pain
We wouldn't wish you back
To suffer that again
Today we say goodbye
And as you take your final rest
That garden must be beautiful
Because you are one of the best.

Dear Shurtliff Family,

This poem by an unknown author seems just right. I will be there at the service in Enterprise.

Dear Leona, sorry about the loss of Larry, even though it's been 20 plus yrs since I saw the two of you at what was then a Dixie College basketball game. I really enjoyed Larry when I got to know him well at BYU graduate school together. With my deepest sympathy,

Dear Shurtliff family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I greatly enjoyed my association with your father. My favorite college course was his fundamentals of coaching class. What a great man and what a great family he has to be so proud of.
