Billie Woolworth Obituary
Billie Bell Woolworth Sept. 18, 1917 Jan. 11, 2012 Resident of San Leandro Billie, age 94, was the only daughter of Sydney Crow "Judge" Bell and Anna Stephensen of Newman, CA. She was the valedictorian of her Oristimba high school class and graduated, with honors, from Mills College in 1938 and devoted her life to her husband, William (1907-1998), and her three children, William Bell Woolworth of San Lorenzo, CA, Sydney Anne Hauser of Whitehall, MD, and David Allan Woolworth of Scotts Valley, CA. Billie was very fond of her five grandchildren and many great-grand children, especially Brian William, who has been living with Bill and Rudi Woolworth the past 2½ years, while his dad, Brian, serves with the army's Special Forces in Haiti; he was able to frequently visit his great-grand mother during this time to the happiness of both. Billie resided at the Carlton Plaza in San Leandro, CA the past ten years and visits from all family members during this time were greatly enjoyed. The Carlton Plaza staff, and especially the Memory Care members, deserves special thanks for their professional care, concern, and thoughtfulness during Billie's stay. She and her husband were life long teachers in the Berkeley and Albany public schools. She frequently juggled family responsibilities and her job as her husband was involved in many community services. In addition to teaching and raising a family of three, Billie hosted AFS exchange students in the family home for ten years, including two students, Sigrid and Ortrun, from Germany, and Theo, from Luxemburg. She cared for these students as her own, and had lifetime relationships with all of them. Billie's children all spent time in the teaching profession, as well as, two of her granddaughters, Yvette Roth of Arlington, WA, and Kate Wolf of Lutherville, MD. Grandson, Tom Hauser, is an attorney residing in Baltimore, MD, and grandson Bradley Woolworth, a financial analyst, lives in Philadelphia, PA, The Crow Family plot at Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman, CA is the final resting place for Billie, alongside her mother and father. Billie enjoyed the company and care of cats and dogs during her life, and any remembrances may be sent to the Oakland SPCA or to the Newman Historical Society.
