Joseph Devane Obituary

Joe passed away on February 21st while out living his life to the fullest. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Patricia, in May of 2020. They had 4 children, Tim (Meg), Suzanne (David), Dan (Nora) and Joe I (Rhonda). They also had 9 grandchildren, Shannon, Amanda, John, Joe Henry, Adam, Noe, Grace, Jake and Zachary. In addition, they had 3 great-grandchildren, Victoria, Henry, and Ella. Joseph was born and raised in East Orange, NJ. He attended Seton Hall Preparatory school, then graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a degree in Economics. Joe joined the Navy ROTC while attending Holy Cross and attained the rank Ensign. His first duty assignment was aboard the USS Norton Sound as a navigation officer, and promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. The ship was stationed at Port Hueneme Naval Base in Oxnard, CA. This is where he met and married Pat in 1955. Shortly thereafter, Joe was transferred to Washington DC. He completed his Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center and became a JAG Officer. He was transferred to Naval Station Treasure Island in San Francisco. After completing their military obligation, they settled in Hayward, CA. They filled their house with love and laughter while raising their family. Upon leaving military service, Joe went into private law practice. Eventually, he set up his practice in the quiet community of Dublin. He was a founding member of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past president. Joe was a Judge Pro Tem for the Alameda Superior Courts and later served as an Administrative Law Judge for the City of Dublin. Joe never forgot his Catholic upbringing and was active in his local churches St. Bede as a basketball coach and All Saints as a Boy Scout leader. He was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society as well as the Knights of Columbus. Joe also serve on several committees for the City of Hayward. He and Pat were very socially active, hosting bridge parties, neighborhood block parties, and were members of the Hayward Dance Club. Joe passed along his love of cooking to his children. He would don a Chef's coat and hat while performing cooking demonstrations for Pat's primary school students. Joe was an avid reader and had a never ending quest for knowledge and learning. He and Pat traveled to over 44 countries, including China, Russia and their ancestral roots in Ireland and Hungary. Hawaii was one of their most favorite travel destinations. Joe loved the outdoors. He was an avid runner and enjoyed taking the family on camping and backpacking vacations. Trips to Yosemite and the Mendocino Headlands were frequent. Joe will be remembered for his passion and zest for life. He was always livening up the room with a joke, a story, a smile and his infectious laugh. Joe's love for Pat was deep and without end. He is now where he longed to be, with Pat. Joe lived by the humble tenets of the Prayer of St. Francis, and now, his life is complete; 'It is in dying, we are born to eternal life.' Per Joe's request, all services will be private.

I was a roomate.of Joe sophomore year at the Cross. I lived in Westfield, about 15 miles from Joe and we were regulars in each others homes and did a lot of double dating through our college summers. While Joe was in the Nany for the first coupe years I went to Georgetown Law,graduated in1957 and stayed for 40 years clerking for a federal judge and in private practice. We had many fun times withPat and my wife and other friends. I stayed in fairly close touch with Joe and Patover the years and would see them on business trips.to the Bay area. I did work for KPIX, theCbS affiliate and for the Westinghouse facility in Sunnyvale. On our last trip west around 2012, Joe and. Pat took us to the home of good friends in the mountains south of Reno. It was an exceptional weekend. I feel a real loss with Joe´s passing. He was a great guy!
