Patrick Kavanaugh Obituary

Dr. Patrick Kavanaugh
Dec. 3, 1951 - Jun. 19, 2016
Danville, CA
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden death of our beloved father, colleague, friend, and doctor, Dr. Patrick Eugene Kavanaugh on Sunday, June 19, 2016 in Danville, California.
Dr. Kavanaugh was a one of a kind physician. His infectious smile, quick wit, keen insight and love for his patients will forever be embedded in the memories and hearts of everyone he knew. He was a mentor to the many nurses who worked with him throughout his 30 plus years at Mt Diablo Hospital now known as John Muir Medical Center. He was known to smile and say hello to everyone he came across. He would hug every single one of his patients as they completed their office visit and had a way of making everyone feel at ease. Dr. Kavanaugh's patients are known to talk about how he saved their lives and how they owe their lives to him. He treated everyone with respect, kindness and appreciation. His daily dose of jokes will be missed. He was a bright light to all.
Dr. Kavanaugh was born December 3, 1951 in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Louis R. Kavanaugh Sr. and Rosina Kavanaugh (Gorman). He was a graduate of Robertson High School and a 1973 summa cum laude graduate of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology where he was designated a Tech Scholar. He received an M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico in 1977 and completed an internship-residency program in internal medicine, as well a fellowship in cardiology, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Martinez, CA from 1977-1982. Dr. Kavanaugh was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspeciality board in cardiovascular diseases. His professional societies include: Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Member of the American College of Physicians, and Member of the American Heart Association. Dr. Kavanaugh served as staff Cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente Medical, in Martinez and San Francisco and has been an Active Staff Cardiologist since 1983 at John Muir Medical Center. He also served as a partner at Contra Costa Cardiology Medical Group in Concord, CA. Positions held at John Muir Medical Center Concord campus include Medical Director, Critical Care Unit, Co-Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Services, and Member, Medical Executive Committee.
Dr. Kavanaugh is survived by daughters, Kayla and Nikki Kavanaugh, son, Cameron Kavanaugh and siblings, Louis Kavanaugh Jr., Nick Kavanaugh, Janice Kavanaugh, Anthony Kavanaugh, Karen Manus, and Elizabeth Kavanaugh.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30am, on Monday, June 27th at St. Isidore Church located at 440 La Gonda Way, Danville. Reception to follow in the St. Isidore Room across the street. We encourage you to bring your favorite picture to add to our memory board.
Donations to American Heart Association are encouraged in lieu of flowers.

I am ordering new cardiac medicine today and happened to look up Dr. Kavanaugh's name and found his obit. Today, Dec. 3, is his b-day! He must be looking down from heaven. He was my first cardiologist, when I first began having cardiac issues as a healthy woman, in my late 40's. As everyone states, he was absolutely the kindest, most HUMAN doctor I'd ever met and made having to go to the doctor and dealing with medical issues completely bearable. I adored him as a physician and was utterly sad when he passed. No one will replace him. :( Now my son is in med school and I can only hope he will ever be as fine of a physician as this man. God Bless you, Dr. K, and thank you.

I worked at the hospital with Dr. Kavanaugh since he joined us at Mount Diablo. He was always so bright, sunny, and kind. When ever I passed him in the hall he would smile that sweet smile...it is engraved in my heart. Thank You Doctor!

I never met Dr. Kavanaugh. I knew him only as the voice through my headphones. I am a medical transcriptionist who transcribed many of his dictations over the past 7 years. He is one of the few physicians that acknowledge the transcriptionist at the other end. Without fail, he always ended his reports with wishing us a "very nice day out there in transcription land." He always made my days brighter. My deep condolences to his family and friends.

I never met Dr. Kavanaugh in person, but sometimes I feel like I did. I often transcribed his medical reports for John Muir and he was one of my favorites! It is very rare that a doctor even acknowledges that there is a real person on our end, but Dr. Kavanaugh ALWAYS ended each report wishing us a "very nice day out there in transcription land." It pretty much made my day every time he said it and it somehow helped to make dealing with all the difficult doctors a little easier. He was often joking with others during his dictations and saying Hi to colleagues passing him. I am very saddened to learn about his passing. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends in this time of sadness. -C. Dyer

I would like to extend my deepest, deepest condolences to Dr. Kavanaugh's family. He was all that was written about him and more. Even though we didn't see eachother anymore( I no longer work at Mt.D) he will always be very special to me. To this day I miss his smile and how genuinely caring he was. I will never forget how excited he was when his wife was pregnant with Cameron. He was so proud he was going to have a son. One night he comes in to the ER all happy, " Hey Kath guess what his initials are going to be? CPK !! He was just beaming and so happy we laughed. He was a great man and I am so so sorry for your loss. I pray for peace in your hearts. God Bless you all.

Dr Kavanaugh saved my life, and it was right out of the movies. He was waiting for my arrival, outside the hospital, and he wheeled me in himself and had my femoral artery open in less than 5 minutes.
He was a great man, and a great doctor. He was so down to earth! I will miss him forever.

I have been fortunate to be my elderly Mother in Law's companion (and ears) for the last 2 years at all of her hospital stays/ appointments with Dr. Kavanaugh. We are stunned at his sudden passing. His interest in her as a person, our family, loss of pets. His humor, compassion, gentle, and thorough care is going to be missed by both of us.

We are keeping his family and friends in our prayers.

Affectionately,

What can we say that hasn't already been said. Dr. Kavanaugh will be sorely missed by our household. I was fortunate enough also to have had Dr. Kavanaugh on duty the night I went to John Muir Concord Campus with congestive heart failure. I had no idea how serious it was until he made the statement after the fact, I don't think you realized how sick you were. He definitely saved my life that night and brought total healing to my heart. I was so impressed with his compassion for his patients that I referred my husband to him and we have continued to see him for the last 15 yrs. We thought of him as a true friend and an excellent doctor. We always discussed our faith in the Lord when I went to visit him. He not only watched out for my heart but also followed my Polycystic Kidney Disease. I will truly miss him. He will definitely be hard to replace. My condolences go out to the family as they have lost a wonderful loved one. He is in God's loving arms now. God has gained another angel.

My wife and I will miss Dr. Kavanaugh greatly. When I went to the ERat John Muir hospital in concord. I was set at ease by him. He came into my room, sat down and told me and my wife that he knew confidently that I was going to be alright. GOD gave him such compassion. Such understanding. My wife and I lift up Dr. Kavanaugh family to the Lord. That Jesus great love for them will be felt by them in this great loss.

Dr. Kavanaugh was my doctor for several years. He always gave me the time I needed and caught every detail of my case. I could tell he was one of the rare doctors who understood that a person is more than a body. You could feel the concern and interest he had for you and your health.

Dr. K was so much more than a great technician. He understood the Heart on all of it's levels. If everyone were like him the world would be at peace and a lot more joyful.

God Bless you, good doctor, I will remember you fondly.

I remember my Uncle Pat as I believe most people did; as a very sensitive, sweet, interesting, funny and caring man. My dad lost a brother who he loved dearly and I lost an uncle who was taken much too soon and who I loved very much, too. I'm so grateful to have known my Uncle Pat.

Urgent care near Clayton sent me to Dr. Kavanaugh in 1999 with off the chart blood pressure. He got me under control, I've been with him ever since. I just saw Doctor K on July 9th. Very happy I had that appointment. Always looked forward to my time with him. Absolutely the very best!

Dr Kavanaugh was such a pleasure to work with. He was always smiling and joking. A power gap between nurses and doctors didn't exist when sharing the care of a patient. He will be deeply missed by the entire nursing staff.

Dr. Kavanaugh treated my Grandmother & my Mother for many years. He was currently treating my Father as well as my Husband. My Father often commented that he was the reason he is still alive at 94 years old.

He was a kind, sympathetic & skilled physician with empathy and concern for his patients.

We are still in disbelief that this extraordinary man is now gone.

May he rest in peace ..... forever in our
memories.....

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Kavanaugh's death. I had the privilege of being a patient of his in 2002 after my heart attack. I have him to thank for his great surgery expertise and his caring for what was the best for his patient that enables me to live today. Over the years I have thought about him and how fortunate I was that he was my doctor. Please know that others share your opinion of what a kind and caring man he was.
