Rev. David W Matkins

1932 - 2024

Rev. Matkins passed away October 2nd surrounded by his family. Until his passing, he was a minister at Fellowship of Believers Church in Hobbs. He began his second pastoral career there after retiring from the United Methodist Church. He served at Fellowship of Believers for twenty years. He began his ministry in 1962 in Taos, New Mexico. He went on to serve churches in Questa, Albuquerque, Hobbs, Denver City, Monahans, Kermit, Clovis, Artesia and Carlsbad before retiring and moving to Hobbs. After being retired for a short time, he went back to the Methodist Church, then went on to help build Fellowship of Believers. He was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1932 to Ruth and Leo Matkins. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of fifty years, Doris Jean (Guthrie) Matkins, an infant son, one granddaughter, Michelle Ruffner and one great grandson, Dakota Scheller. He is survived by his three daughters, Debra Harrell of Clovis, Denise Layton (Robert) of Hobbs and Donna Ellis (David) of Ingram, Texas. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his church family who he loved very much. May his memory be eternal. David was a man of great character and love, and his influence will continue to guide others in the future. He was always giving back to his community through his ministry and his ability to open his heart to anyone in need. He had so much love for everyone. Rest in peace faithful servant!

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00 am at Fellowship of Believers Church, 5609 N Grimes St, Hobbs, NM 88242 with Johnnie Blalak and Larry Wood officiating. Visitaion will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 3:00 until 5:00 at Fellowship of Believers Church. Burial will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery, 1506 Boyd Dr, Carlsbad, NM 88220 at 3:30 pm.
