Gary Lee Koffler
March 12, 1944 - March 10, 2024
ELKO - Gary Koffler passed away peacefully on a Sunday morning at his home in Elko, NV surrounded by his loved ones on March 10, 2024 at the age of 79, just two days shy of his 80th birthday.
Gary was born on March 12th, 1944 to Joseph and Mary Koffler in Richardton, North Dakota. Out of 12 children, there was only one girl and 11 boys; Gary was the 7th son. Growing up he helped work on his family's farm in Werner, North Dakota. Gary shared stories of napping in the grain silos as a small boy and talked about his brothers having a hard time finding him. They'd ask their mother where to look for him and she knew to send them to the bottom of the grain silo. Gary's family moved to Woodburn, Oregon and he joined the Army soon after the move. While in the army, Gary was in the 101st Airborne, received a parachute badge, combat infantryman's badge, Vietnam service medal, good conduct medal (first award), and expert rifle. Gary's pride in his service to his country was evident to all who knew him. After the military, he returned home to Oregon and then followed one of his brothers to Elko, Nevada to work for Lund Masonry and then George Low Masonry. That sparked a talent that turned into a passion and business: he started Gary's Masonry in 1976. Gary's exceptional masonry craftsmanship continues to adorn numerous businesses, churches, and homes to this day. Gary ended his masonry business in 1989 and worked for the City of Elko in the Parks Department and then for Koffler Masonry in Reno, NV for his brother for a few years. He ended his work career at Barrick Goldstrike, driving a haul pack truck for 18 years. Gary exemplified a strong work ethic. His legacy lives on in not only brick and mortar and his perseverance, but in the family he built with his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen. He was deeply dedicated to his family, prioritizing their well-being and happiness above all else. He was so incredibly proud of all three of his children and five grandchildren, right up until his last breath.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Mary Koffler; brothers: Kevin, Clyde, Wally, and Charles Koffler; sister, Rose Kuhn; mother-in-law, Valeria Lopez; father-in-law, Pablo Lopez; brothers-in-law: Arthur Lopez and Frank Lopez, and sister-in-law, Juanita Lopez.
Gary is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Ellen; son, Kelly Koffler (wife Debbie and daughter Kaylee); daughters: Valerie Bement (husband Donnie; children: Garrison and Gabrielle), and Melissa Bowen (husband Paul, sons: Aiden and Ryker), brothers: Maurice, Lawrence (partner JoyAnn), Ron (wife Sheila), Gene (wife Martie), Joe, and Ralph Koffler, sister-in-law, Lari Koffler, brother-in-law, Manuel Lopez, brother-in-law, Jesse Lopez, sister-in-law, Lily Lopez, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends who were like family to him.
Gary could cut a rug like no one else, jitterbug dancing with Mary Ellen. He loved watching old western movies, especially with legendary actor and his hero John Wayne. Gary cherished the traditions of camping, fishing, shooting, and hunting, passing down his knowledge and love of these activities to future generations. The Ruby Marshes were a frequent fishing, hunting, and camping spot that brought him much happiness. He savored a good meal and often expressed his satisfaction by saying, "That was a great appetizer, now where's the meal!?" Gary was actively involved in his community, contributing his time and resources to support St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, and Elko Jaycees. Gary had a generous spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand or share what he had with others. The loss of Gary is immeasurable; his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Gary was one of the best bosses I've had mostly because he insisted and installed a great work ethic in all of us at Gary's Masonary as he guided us. His service to country, family and employees was never weakened by arbitrary excuses. As a generous soul Gary will be missed by many.
