Daniel Mellado Obituary

MELLADO Daniel A. Mellado, 92 passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. His education was interrupted by a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps. While in the CCC, he was able to attend NMSU. He returned to El Paso and graduated from Bowie High School in 1938. A devoted husband and father, Daniel A. Mellado spent most of life looking out for his family. His eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren provided him with much joy and love. WWII separated him from his then small family. As a member of the First Cavalry (12th Cavalry Division) Daniel A. Mellado fought in New Guinea, The Philippines, Luzon and the Bismarck Archipelago. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. Coming from a family of carpenters, he enjoyed working with wood. In 1960 he started a new career at Ft. Bliss. He eventually was assigned the job of making various custom articles for military training. Because he worked for the Department of Defense, his creations are scattered over a wide area. Those few samples of his work that are owned by family members have sturdy, clean lines that blend in with most homes. He is survived by one daughter, Helen M. Lowe and four sons: Daniel Mellado, Jr., Robert Mellado, Andres Mellado and Dionel Mellado. A sister, Helen Martinez, also survives him Josephine Arias Mellado; his loving wife of 63 years preceded him in death by five years. A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Services entrusted to Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N. Resler Dr., El Paso, TX 79912. www.MartinFuneralHomeWest.com
