JULIA CARSON Obituary

CARSON Julia A. Carson October 9, 1952-September 20, 2012Julie's life was full of accomplishments. She was a Majorette at Ysleta High, class of 70 and taught at Socorro High, Hillcrest Jr. High and Bel Air, where she retired in 2009. She was known by the names Ms. Kumor, Mrs. Hambric, and as Ms. Carson, but mostly she was known as a teacher, friend and a mother. Julie earned a Master's Degree in English from UTEP and was a Professor at EPCC and Howard Payne University. Her master's thesis on La Charreada was published by the Texas Folklore Society. She is survived by her parents, Anna and Lonnie Carson of Mississippi, her daughter Christine Hamm and husband Greg of Texas, her brother Tom Longnecker and wife Bonnie of Louisiana, her beloved cousin, Madeline, her dearest friend Danny Berroteran, extended family and countless friends. We cannot forget her four-legged family, Lestat, Snickers and Sasha, whom she adored. During her three-year battle with a rare form of cervical cancer, Julie showed us all what true courage, dignity and grace is while she held to her faith with an iron fist. Her crusade to educate others to fight cancer continues through the legacy she leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, Julie requests that donations be made to the Oncology Department at Providence Hospital in El Paso. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina with a Memorial Service at 4 p.m. Services under the direction of HILLCREST FUNERAL HOME. 1060 Carolina Dr. 598-3332

Julia was the best friend everyone wanted to have. It's been 10 years now and memories of the friendship we shared are vivid and deeply cherished. I miss her every day. I named my children (Julian and Julia) after her. So glad she was here to meet them.

Ms. Carson has always been and will always be my favorite teacher. She was my junior and senior year teacher at Bel Air High School and she was amazing. She is the reason why I am going to collage full time to be a teacher. She was always so sweet and knew exactly what to tell me to keep me motivated. She was always there to listen when I needed to talk, and there was never a time where I didn't feel better after her wonderful advice. I'm glad I got to have her as my teacher and mentor during her (and my) last year at Bel Air. She will be GREATLY missed but I know she is an angel in a better place now. Many blessings to her family, friends and loved ones.

I worked with Julie at E.P.C.C. where she taught English. I remember that summer after her cancer treatment at M.D. Anderson. She was recalling how she and the doctor "did a little happy dance" because the cancer appeared to have been vanquished. She was a warm, kind-hearted, optimistic, courageous woman who loved football and the theater and had a great sense of humor.She is an inspiration to persevere against the odds. Somewhere, Julie, I hope you're doing that "little happy dance."

Julie was, and continues to be, an inspiration to all she met. As a high school teacher, a mentor teacher, and a friend, she has proven to be one of the single strongest influences in my life. I was a counselor at BAHS when Julia was at Hillcrest and always worked through her class for preregistration of students. She was always most cordial and helpful. I saw her on many occasions and we had nice conversations. I extend to you my deepest sympathy and prayers. My heart aches for you. I'm sorry for your loss.
