Frederick Tomassi Obituary

Restaurateur Frederick L. Tomassi known to all by "Freddie Thomas", died peacefully at the age of 87 at Pleasant Ridge Manor West on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Born in a log cabin in Cabin Creek, West Virginia on January 25, 1922, his Italian immigrant parents, the late Guiseppe Tomassi and Saveria Cicco Tomassi, moved their family to Erie in 1924. He was the 10th child born of 12 children, and the last surviving child of his late parents. He graduated from Academy High School in 1939. A veteran of the United States Coast Guard in World War II, "Freddie" enrolled at Gannon College on the GI Bill and graduated from Gannon with a four year Business Degree in three years. The owner of a number of different restaurants in the city of Erie, he was best known for the Office Lounge on Peach Street, between 8th & 9th (razed for city redevelopment years ago), and Fredrico's Ports of Call, on West 18th Street, between Peach and Sassafras. He retired from Pleasant Ridge Manor as it's purchasing agent. He was a life member of the Maennerchor Club, and avid reader, and enjoyed travel. He was also a lifelong member of the "Cherry Street Gang" and the "Ice House Gang," both childhood groups from Little Italy. He was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers, Carmen, Angelo, Dicky, Eugene and Frank and six sisters, Mary, Margaret, Lucy, Nettie, Helen, and Vita, and his wife of 36 years, Irvine Grillo Tomassi. He is survived by his son Dr. Frederick (Rick) Joseph Tomassi and his wife Sandy, and his daughter, Dana Maria Russo and her husband, James, all of Erie. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Saveria and Anna Russo, a sister-in-law, Dolores "Dee Dee" Grillo Cox and her husband, Harry Cox, and a niece, Pamela Cox Miller. He is also survived by his special friend, Carol Turick and many loving, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. And are invited to attend a service there on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 1617 Walnut Street, at 10:00 a.m Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum. Dear Ricky and Dana,

So sorry I wasn't there for the funeral. I've been thinking about you though. As a little kid, I always enjoyed spending time with you and Uncle Freddy and Aunt Irv, and your beautiful dog (Richa?). Grandma Helen's house lit up when you and your family came down on Christmas eve! I'll miss your Dad a lot. My Dad sends his wishes to both of you.

Sending hugs your way,

Your cousin Heather

January 26, 2010

To Rick & Sandy, So sorry for your loss in more ways than one. I can only tell you as a child Uncle Fred was kind to me. Giving me icecream cones and letting a little 4/5 year old plunk on a great piano in his restaurant. Uncle Fred gave out $5's to children long before it became popular by way of a hand clap.(A funny parity of a high five only in cash )Only no one ever had to say "give me 5" to Uncle Fred. His 5 dollar signature hand out, was before he said good bye. Time has been decades since I last saw Uncle Fred. As life alters our paths with friends and family.
The end of an era. Good bye Uncle Fred, thanks for the $5 back in 1959 that made one little kid say WOW a whole five dollars! With a free ice cream who can beat that?
Sorry not to have gone to the furneral home, my health prevented me.
God bless your family.
Love and sympathy.
Sincerely, Cousin Tara (Tomassi) Miller and husband Jack.

I will always be thankful for the brightest smile I have ever met in my life. I met Freddy on my tenth birthday and he served me lunch and a very special birthday cake from Fredricos. That was so special for me. I last saw Freddy in Phx. and he couldn't tell my brother and me enough stories. I will always have a place in my heart for you young man. Heaven is a better place now. Ricky, It is with sadness that I read online (I'm out of town) of your dad's passing. I know we have talked about how difficult these last few years have been for him. He was so lucky to have you and Sandy and your sister. You have been wonderful supports to him. I'm sure you will hear many "Freddy stories" over the next few days. I hope that these stories and your many memories will sustain you in the next weeks. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I grew up a few doors away from Freddy in Little Italy. He was my idol. He was tall, dark and handsome and always a gentleman. I was 10 yrs younger and he took a special interest in me and always advised me in the right road to take in life. He was a strong political supporter in all my campigns. He loved my brother Italo. We were very close. I will miss him. I will keep him in my prayers.
