Clarence H. "Red" Striewig

Seven Valleys - Clarence H. "Red" Striewig, 80, died unexpectedly April 26, 2018 at UPMC Pinnacle Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of Joann V. (Shaffer) Striewig. The couple celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary on June 16th.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main St., Glen Rock, with the Rev. Robert S. Harris officiating. Burial with following in Giesey Memorial Cemetery, Shrewsbury. Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Clarence was born on May 8, 1937 in Shrewsbury and was a son of the late Clarence M. and Naomi I. (Sipe) Striewig.

He was a self-employed truck driver for all his life and enjoyed working on and restoring old trucks and tractors. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Historic Truck Society.

Besides his wife, he leaves two children, Stanley O. Striewig (Donna) of Thomasville and Sandy E. Bullard (John) of Timonium MD; two grandsons, Douglas S Frantz (Jill) and Jason W. Frantz (Joyce); a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn M. Frantz; a sister, Beverly A. Jones of Seven Valleys; and his faithful companion dog, Bo.

The past few days I've noticed more than the normal amount of cars at our elderly neighbors house. I wondered if something was up but then yesterday there was a lot more cars packing the driveway. This morning I found out that our neighbor and dear friend Clarence Striewig passed away this past Thursday. "Red" was his preferred name, so that is what he was called by everyone. He and his wife Joann were/are the nicest people one could know.

Red was also a great mechanic, a dying breed, and worked on our lawn tractor and snow blower more times than I could say. I am still astounded by his knowledge and willingness to share it. Once while trying to get our snow blower started, the engine blew out. Apparently there wasn't any oil in it. When he told us what happened, he swore it was his fault for not checking the oil before starting. We disagreed saying that it was our fault for not putting oil into it. He felt so bad, that he gave us one of his snow blowers. We still have both blowers and whenever I see them, I think of him.
He had multiple tractors that he kept in his barn down at his property on the trail. He took care of them and proudly showed off pictures of them on his phone. I wish I could remember all the tricks he showed me on how to get the mower / blower started. I'm sure I'll be struggling this summer.

Down at his property on the Old Trail he had wild blackberry bushes growing. Once he found me picking berries from the few scraggly bushes growing alongside our road. He suggested that I pick from his blackberry bushes instead. I went down to look for them and I wasn't sure exactly where they were and when he asked I told him so. So he went down with one of his tractors and mowed the land all around where the bushes were growing. I could not miss them now. I've picked berries there for about 4 years now and he always made sure to mow right before the berries were ripe. I make jam with the berries and for the past 3 years I've sold the jam at church at our annual freezer sale. I always make sure people know they are wild berries from Southern York County.

He was a great animal lover, so we got along just fine. He would regularly trap stray cats and get them fixed before releasing them again. I'm fairly sure one of our cats was one of those. We live on a fairly busy country road and their house rests on a turn in the road. So as you might imagine animals get killed by cars too often. Their house also has an upper driveway where the school buses turn around. Red always took care of the animals so that the kids didn't have to see them. He then buried them on his property.

I'm know he touched many lives in Southern York County. He sure did seem to know a lot of people. Red was a talker and every time we met, he had stories to tell. Some were of his mischievous youth, some were from his years as a trucker, many were various antidotes about life in Southern York County, all were wonderful.

I hope people hear of his passing and remember him and all he was with fondness and gratitude. I know I sure will.

Red was a great man. Joyce and I only knew Red for a short time, but his impact on our lives was enormous. Red was a wealth of knowledge, who would graciously share it, expecting nothing in return. We're so grateful for his friendship. RIP Lugnut! Thank you for being our friend.
