Carl Antrim Obituary

Carl M. Antrim, 85, of Independence, Mo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016.

Carl was born June 16, 1931, at home in Kansas City, Mo., the son of George W. and Beatrice (Carpenter) Antrim. On June 20, 1954, Carl married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Holder, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Independence, Mo.

He and Shirley have three daughters, Sheri L. Dunn, Cathy E. Seger (married to Jim Seger), and Susan C. Antrim (married to Dr. Jim Ragan), nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He graduated from William Chrisman High School, and the University of Missouri Science and Technology, (Missouri School of Mines – Rolla, Mo.) with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Carl served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

While in the Air Force, he was assigned to the Special Weapons division (Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs). He had the following security clearances: Top Secret (military) and a "Q" clearance AEC (Category 8; investigated by the FBI). Shirley also had these same two security clearances, since they were married. When the Strategic Air Command (SAC) obtained authorization to have Special Weapons on their bases, Carl was selected to be a member of the transfer team charged with cleaning the Nuclear Capsule, inspecting the weapons and certifying that the weapons were ready for service. His team was then responsible for delivering the bombs to Whiteman AFB.

Carl retired as Vice President from Black & Veatch after 33 years; he held multiple positions within the company. Throughout his professional life, he was a Registered Professional Engineer in 38 states and travelled to more than 30 countries.

After retirement, he kept busy as a volunteer for Youth Friends and the GED program, a tutor for the Literacy Council of Independence, and served on the Ordinance Review Committee for the City of Independence.

Please accept my condolences at your loss. I not only worked for Carl but was mentored / coached by him as well. I still speak of Carl and lessons I learned from him, in my daily walk of mentoring the young professionals at B&V.

Carl casts a long shadow of influence over the many people he has touched and inspired each of us to be better than we ever thought we could be . . . not just because he was a wise man, but because he cared. I not only consider Carl as a good coach but a great role model.

He was a good man and will be deeply missed.

Sue, Sheri, Cathy and Shirley,

At times like this we are reminded of the preciousness of life, not to be taken for granted. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sue, I will always remember your Dad's consistently cheery demeanor. Every time I think of him I remember how he would go around your house singing I'm a ding dong daddy from Dumas babe and you oughta see me do my stuff. Too funny the great memories that stick with you and I'm sure you have a life full of them about your Dad! Again, sincere condolences to your entire family.
