Grant Eckfeldt Obituary

BARNSTABLE -- Grant Eckfeldt Sr., 81, of South Dennis, died Friday, Dec. 6 at the Barnstable Hospice House, after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Evelyn F. (Osterberg) Senior Eckfeldt for 20 years.

Born, raised and educated in Fitchburg, Mr. Eckfeldt was the son of the late Thomas H. and Ruth Carter (Grant) Eckfeldt. He graduated Fitchburg High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 39 years, both on actuve duty and in the reserves. During World War II, he served in the European Division Air Transport Command and was awarded the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Eckfeldt owned and operated Fitchburg Jeep in Fitchburg for over 30 years before retiring to Cape Cod in 1977. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors and his English setter, who went everywhere with him.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Eckfeldt is survived by a son, Grant Eckfeldt Jr. of Waterbury Center, Vt.; a daughter, Betsy Eckfeldt of Roxbury, Vt.; a stepson, James Senior of North Reading; a stepdaughter, Abigail West of South Carolina; two sisters, Rosamund Buchanan of Amherst, N.H., and Carolyn Kozelka of Chapel Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several neices and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Chunn.

ECKFELDT -- Grant Sr., of South Dennis. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Northside United Methodist Church, 701 Airline Road, Brewster. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Barnstable Hospice House, 88 Railroad Ave., Barnstable, MA 02630, or to the Northside United Methodist Church, 701 Airline Road, Brewster, MA 02631. Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, is in charge of arrangements.
