Michael LaBelle Obituary

Mexico, Maine

Michael LaBelle, 61, of Mexico, Maine, passed away on Christmas Day.

Michael was born on October 15, 1962, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts to Betty (Gelinas) and Richard LaBelle. He was a Wilbraham & Monson Academy and Georgetown University graduate, but his true education was the world. Michael traveled to as many places as he could. He journeyed to Europe and Latin America, studied in Strasbourg, lived in Romania for a time, spoke multiple languages, and recently split his time between Mexico, Maine, and Mexico the country.

Michael was a searcher and adventurer. He was an artist as well as an art curator, and at various points in his life owned a gallery in Provincetown, operated a bar in Transylvania, wrote and sold advertising for publications, and was a respected online bookseller.

Michael had an uproarious laugh, especially while telling stories and calling out the absurd. He talked to everyone he met and was as likely to share pictures of people he'd just met sitting next to him on a plane as of longtime friends and family. He had acquaintances and friends everywhere he went.

Michael loved his family and friends. He struggled with his health in life, but he also had an indomitable spirit that he shared with everyone. He loved to buy books and other gifts for people that he thought would bring them joy. He especially loved to share books with his mother whom he adored and who adored him.

Michael belonged to different churches and volunteered as a driver for a crisis center in Maine. He had a giving nature and a loving soul.

He is survived by his mother, Betty, who cared for him his whole life.

Michael is also survived by siblings Kathy LaBelle and her wife Daniele Dacalor, James LaBelle and his wife Amy, Jean LaBelle-Pierce and her husband Dennis, Gus LaBelle and his wife Talia. He is also survived by his stepmother, Bonnie LaBelle, and her husband Leo Roomets. Michael's father, Richard, passed away in 1993. Michael is also survived by his nephew Thomas LaBelle and his wife Gabriela, nieces Meredith LaBelle, Elise and Gabrielle Pierce, Serenity Rose and Isabella LaBelle. Michael is survived by many dear friends in Maine, Florida, and around the world. His many aunts, uncles, and cousins also mourn his passing.

A private service will be held for Michael. In his honor, donations can be made to the Oxford County Mental Health Services in Maine or to a charity of your choice.

I have no Michael for 28 years. I have lived with him on and off from City to City and reignited our friendship. I helped him buy a house in Old Town where I became the apartment manager, and I've been a travel companion off and on. One thing about Michael is he lived a life more full than most people can do in 10 lifetimes. I kind-hearted person with a beautiful smile and an uplifting laughter. He'll be missed by many.

Michael and I have been friends for 28 years. I have lived with him on and off. We bought property in Old Town Maine where I became department manager. And also traveled the country now and then, but Michael did more in his life that most people will do in 10 lifetimes. He will be greatly missed by many.

Michael, what I loved about you was your sense of adventure, your devotion to books, your love of our great nation. And I was amazed at your talent for drawing! Your gain is our loss--seeing Jesus face to face.

My name is Sue and I'm from Rumford Maine and even though I only knew Michael for a brief time, he was such a beautiful man in his heart and in his soul. He told me that he thought I was beautiful and that I reminded him of his mother. I'll never forget it. May You rest in peace, Michael. My condolences to his family.

Michael was a relatively new member to Pennacook Art Center, and many of us were looking forward to working together with him on board. Sad to see him go. His enthusiasm will be missed!

I will always know Michael because Michael opened up his heart to you as soon as you would meet him. He was a dear friend of mine. We talked on many spiritual topics. We travelled together to Washington DC. We would pour our hearts out to one another. He is and will always be a true friend. I will miss him so much. He would help anyone in any way he could. He had a good heart. He is a very nice man and has a great sense of humor. The world is a little colder without him. I know that we will see each other again in the next life. God be with him and God be with your family.
