Kenneth Steadman Obituary
GENEVA - Born May 24, 1937, in Rochester N.Y., Kenneth (Ken) passed away peacefully at Canterbury Woods in Williamsville, where he resided to be close to family. Ken passed on May 1, 2025 - three years to the day after the passing of his wife of 61 years - Eva Maria Steadman (née Stern).
Kenneth was son of the late Luville Taylor and Elizabeth (Betty) Steadman (née Genung) of Rochester N.Y.; brother to Stephen (Brigitte) of Watertown MA and the late Bruce (Maureen) of Atlanta GA. Ken is survived by his brother Stephen; sons Peter, Erich (Mimi), and Karl; daughter Sharon (Christopher); grandchildren Amanda, Patrick, Avery (Tyler), Emma, and Carter; and many cousins; nieces; and nephews.
Dr. Steadman practiced obstetrics and gynecology with Geneva Medical Associates from 1970 to 1999. He was deeply honored to serve as an obstetrician/gynecologist, and took great pride in guiding countless families through some of life's most profound moments. Over the course of his career, he delivered thousands of babies and was a trusted presence in the lives of many throughout the community.
Ken graduated from Brighton High School in Rochester N.Y. and Cornell University. Ken and Eva met at Cornell University and were married in 1960 while Ken attended medical school at Upstate Medical School in Syracuse.
In 1968, after Ken completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester, the Steadmans moved to Fort Jackson SC, so Ken could complete his U.S. Army service as an obstetrician/gynecologist. They moved to Geneva in 1970 and built their house on Hastings Road in the town of Geneva on land that was formerly part of Stern's Nurseries.
Community service was a cornerstone to Dr. Steadman's life, reflected in his decades of dedicated community involvement. A proud member of the Geneva Rotary Club for over 50 years, he rarely missed a weekly meeting and often visited other clubs while traveling. Ken actively encouraged others to join Rotary and was instrumental in expanding the Rotary District 7120 Youth Exchange Program, inspiring youth and families to take part in cultural exchanges. This work brought Ken to Brazil where he spent a few weeks working as a representative to help foster the Rotary student exchange program between South American countries and North America. Ken and Eva also hosted numerous foreign exchange students and participated in the Rotary Friendship Exchange, fostering global understanding and fellowship. Their shared commitment to service also led them to Africa and India, where they supported Rotary's global initiative to eradicate polio, as well as a school and health center in Malawi.
In addition to the Rotary Club activities, Ken was also active with The Presbyterian Church, the Ontario County Medical Society, the Ontario County Public Health Advisory Committee, the Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency, the Ontario County Community Services Board, the Geneva Boys and Girls Club, the Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and Geneva Little League.
Ken and Eva were each awarded the Paul Harris Fellow award, the highest award in Rotary for making an outstanding contribution to the community. In 2016 Ken and Eva were awarded the Geneva Rotary Club Springstead award for their community service and the accompanying legislative resolution honoring this award. He was proud to be a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and received recognition from the University of Rochester with a Medical Associates award and the Steadman Family's 2024 receipt of the University of Rochester John N. Wilder Alumni Award.
Ken and Eva were frequent visitors and supporters to restaurants, music, and events throughout Geneva and the surrounding Rochester and Finger Lakes area. They traveled extensively to numerous countries across all seven continents, including Antarctica, inspiring a love of global adventure within their family. At home they enjoyed gardening, sharing their garden harvest with others, and nurturing the plants that beautified their property.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva, 24 Park Place, followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Geneva Boys and Girls Club or Rotary International.
