Richard Bogan Obituary

NEWARK– Richard J. Bogan, 71, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Th family will greet friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, (January 5), at Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St, Newark. Dick's funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, (January 6), at St. Michael Church, 401 S. Main Street, Newark, N.Y.

Dick was born on April 24, 1952, in Utica, N.Y., as the son of Michael and Hannah (McCarthy) Bogan. Growing up in the area, he completed his education at Pal-Mac High School, graduating in the class of 1970. Post-graduation, he pursued studies at Finger Lakes Community College before starting as an apprentice electrician at Eastman Kodak.

His journey in law enforcement began in 1976 when he joined the Newark Police Department, influenced by his uncle who served as a transit police officer in New York City. Rising through the ranks, he retired in 2008 as the Police Chief. Following this tenure, he assumed the role of Chief of Police for Lyons, N.Y., serving until 2016. Later, Dick took on the responsibility of code enforcement officer for Lyons, N.Y., while concurrently managing his electrical contracting business during his law enforcement career.

Beyond his professional life, Dick was deeply involved in various organizations, including the Newark Knights of Columbus, Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Newark Fire Department, and was an active member of St. Michael Church in Newark. He cherished spending time assisting his sons with household projects, adoring his role as "Poppie" to his grandchildren, and indulging in his passion for motorcycle riding.

Dick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-two years, Belinda (Bunny) Bogan; his sons Anthony (Andrea) Bogan and Michael (Catherine) Bogan; grandchildren Alivia, Ava, Amelia, Aubree and McKenna; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Barb (Chuck) Huff and Kathy Sapp; mother to his granddaughter McKenna, Haley VanLaeken; many nieces, nephews and countless close friends.

Dick is predeceased by his parents, Michael (Hannah) Bogan; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard (Ellen) Sapp.

My condolences to the whole Bogan family. I attended supervisors school with Dick in Rochester. He was quite a guy, enjoyed getting to know each other and busting each others chops about life. I lost touch after I retired in 2009. I ran into a contractor from Newark this summer in PY. I asked him to pass on my hello to Dick. He assured me he would while telling me Dick was having some health issues. RIP my friend. No more bad guys in Heaven.

Another one of our Blue Kights members has past, Dick was all ways giving us a laugh when riding motorcycle just a good natured guy that would do anything for you and been known to give brakes to many down on their luck. Esther and I will miss you but thinking of all the laughs we had will bring a smile to our faces.
