James Singleton Obituary

Mr. James "Jim" M. Singleton, 72, of Frederick, died Friday, Jan. 24, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Leigh Eastman Singleton.

Prior to his retirement, he was acting director for the Frederick County Economic and Community Development Commission (ECDC) from 1995 to 1997, and was instrumental in the design and implementation of their Internet homepage.

Prior to his association with the ECDC, Mr. Singleton was vice president and treasurer of Micro Tech Inc. from 1984 to 1987. He relocated the firm to Frederick in 1987, renaming it Singleton Corp. and serving as president and CEO.

He received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Alabama, and continued his education with post-graduate courses at Bentley College, Boston.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Korean Conflict.

He served with the Frederick Community Action Agency, Tourism Council, board member of Frederick Area Committee on Transportation, the ECDC Advance Team, Greater Washington Initiative, ABDOC, Frederick Airport Committee and many others.

Mr. Singleton was a member of Rotary International, a Paul Harris Fellow, was past president and on the board of trustees for the Historical Society, was president and vice president of Frederick County Men's Republican Club, and was a former member of the Masons.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Jeb D. Singleton of Frederick; two daughters, Marilyn Balderson and husband Bob of Haymarket, Va., and Carol Watson and husband Keith of Gainesville, Va.; two granddaughters, Jessica Jenkins and Elizabeth Norris; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Campbell; a great-grandson, Jacob Norris; and one sister, Bonnie Parrish of Bristow, Va.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. in Fort Myer Chapel of Arlington National Cemetery. Inurnment will follow in the Columbarium.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glenn Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

Arrangements are being handled by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.
