John Whittaker

1946 - 2023

John C. Whittaker passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 11th, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Louise (Hoffman) Whittaker in 2003. The two were married at the Graceham Moravian Church in 1970, and began their life together in Thurmont. John is also preceded in death by his father, Harry James Whittaker (1990) and by his mother, Emma Beatrice Whittaker (1991).

A well-known member of the community, John made a career of delivering ready-mix concrete, until his retirement from Superior Concrete after 37 years of service. John was just as active in everything mechanical, up to and including serving as chief mechanic for Dave Lawyer's race team in the '90's. John's retirement was spent repairing small engines, lawn mowers, snow blowers, cars, and basically anything and everything else. He could always be found clearing a neighbor's driveway during or after a snowstorm, dropping in on a local auction, spending time with his close friends, or mowing a neighbor's lawn. They were the things that brought him joy and purpose, and was doing right up to his last breath.

John is survived by his only brother, Allen Whittaker, and nephew, Jason Whittaker, both of Tallahassee, Florida; and Annie (Sam) Eyler, cousin of John's late wife, Alice, of Thurmont; close friends, Donna Carlisle, and Dave Lawyer both of Thurmont; as well as good neighbors and countless friends. His passing leaves a void not too soon filled. "You are loved and will be sorely missed."

The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont.

Services to begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home in Thurmont with Rev. Tim May officiating. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
